Banana flower or mocha is one of the favorite dishes of Goursundar. This is the reason it is necessary to offer it on all Goudiya utsavs. We simply cannot imagine Gour Appearance Day without Mocha and shukto.
Of course, Goursundar, since he plays the role of the perfect and ideal devotee, he likes all nutritious stuff, unlike his Braja-alter-ego who guzzles on ghee-dripping boondi ka laddoo and butter. Just see what fabulous nutritional value the mocha has !!
It has a lot of medicinal values, like blood purification, curing menstrual disorders, constipation, stomach ulcers. Also as it is rich in fibre content, it increases the hemoglobin cell levels in our blood.
Banana blossom considered a very effective cure for menstrual disorders like painful menstruation and bleeding. It is also supposed to be a good lactating agent. It is also a good source for Vitamin A, Vitamin C and iron and calcium.
Here, for the benefit of premis, i would also like to mention that, in Sri Bishnupriya-ballabh Mandir, during Gour-Jayanti it is imperative to offer 'garbho-mocha'. What is this 'garbho-mocha' ? Well, it is a mocha, from which bananas have still not sprouted. This means, that all its nutrients are intact inside the blossoms. i cannot tell you - noona can - how transcendentally delicious it is !!! Many devotees sacrifice the entire banana-yield, cut off the flower as soon as it is born, and offers it to the Mandir. The matajis of the Mandir then cook these garbho-mochas to teh intense delight of Goursundar

This film is very good, however i must mention that - do you notice that yellow part - when you cannot go on peeling any more? Well, they do not tell you what to do with that yellow part. The viewers will presume that you have to throw away the yellow "core". But no !! You simply chop the entire yellow core to very fine pieces and use it along with the cleaned blossoms.
Now for the ghonto -

Cooking Time: 45 mins
1 Banana Flower
1 tsp Ginger Paste
grated fresh Coconut 4 tbsps
1 peeled and diced Potato
1 Bay Leaf
1 tsp Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Cumin Powder
1 tsp Garam Masala
1 tsp Ghee
1 tsp Turmeric powder
pinch of asafoetida
Salt to taste
Sugar to taste
Chop the banana blossom finely. Soak in enough water overnight. In the morning, throw that water. Now put them in enough fresh water and boil in the pressure cooker for 4 whistles. Take out from cooker and pour in a strainer. Throw the dark colored water. Hold the strainer under tap water, squeeze and wash the mocha thoroughly. This step is rather important, for if you don't do this, it will have an unhealthy bitter taste, which is not good at all. Finally squeeze out all the water from the mocha.
Boil the potatoes separately.
Heat the ghee, put cumin seeds. Saute the boiled potatoes. Then add the mocha and saute thoroughly for 5 minutes stirring vigorously. Then add ginger paste, cumin powder and saute for 1 minute. Add salt, sugar, asafoetida and mix well. Cover and cook in very low heat for 1 minute. Add garam masala and remove from flame. While serving, garnish with grated fresh coconut. You can also add fried / roasted powdered / whole peanuts.
Note : YOu may or may not add chilly.
