Sri Krishna, the Ocean of mercy, is dancing to the tune of His resonating flutes. He is gazing at His toes with soulful eyes. It appears as if His eyes are overflowing with love and mercy. I can hear the soft tinkle of His gem studded anklets! 39<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

rila Kavir\u00e2j Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained this verse as follows: Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 cried out – “H\u00e2 Krishna! Please let me behold Your moon-like face!\u201d And the next moment She fainted. Then Lalit\u00e2 and the other sakhis<\/em> placed Sri Krishna\u2019s pras\u00e2di t\u00e2mbul<\/em> in Her mouth, which brought Her back. Then they told Her, \u2018Dear Sakhi<\/em>, open Your eyes. Your beloved Sri Krishna is here.\u2019 Hearing this Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 was somewhat consoled, but She had become so weak suffering from viraha<\/em> that She could not open Her eyes. She said with Her eyes closed, \u2018Sakhi<\/em>! Is it true that Krishna has come?\u2019 In this verse Sri Lil\u00e2shuk has echoed Srimati\u2019s words. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 is telling her sakhis<\/em>-\u2018O sakhi<\/em>! Sri Krishna always walks as if He is dancing. Due to this, His gem studded anklets tinkle rhythmically when He walks. If I can hear that tinkling, I will know He has really arrived. Why should He come? <\/span>Well, He is an Ocean of mercy. Therefore, He will come to give me darshan<\/em> and fulfil my prayer. In what manner is he going to give me darshan<\/em>? By playing the flute. The music of the flute is resonating due to the tinkling of His anklets and armlets. They are keeping rhythm with His feet that are dancing.\u2019 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While playing the flute He is keeping rhythm with His feet and hence is gazing at them. It seems as if He is doing \u00e2rati <\/em>of His toes with mischievous eyes full of love sports.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Another meaning of \u2018\u00e2lola-lochanayor \u2013 vilokita \u2013 keli \u2013 dh\u00e2r\u00e2 nirajitan tasyaiva \u2013 agra \u2013 charanaih<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 <\/em>is – the Vrajadevis<\/em> are performing \u00e2rati<\/em> of His toes with their exceedingly loving gaze. A devout poet has expressed the mood of this verse in a sweet manner –<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni is saying) – “Sakhi<\/em>, it is indeed true that I can hear very sweet tinkling of the anklets. Sakhi,<\/em> undeniably His sweet lips are playing sweet notes into the flute. Sakhi<\/em>, it is true indeed that Shy\u00e2m R\u00e2y has come. There! There! <\/span>Look at His eyes \u2013 how He is lost in His own thoughts and gazing at His feet. Poet Rasa-Sudh\u00e2kar stands aside and wonders about Her ecstatic delirium – Where is Shy\u00e2m R\u00e2y and where is the flute? Where do the anklets sound? I cannot make out any of these.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the siddha<\/em> state Sri Lil\u00e2shuk who is in the mood of a sakhi<\/em> is saying, when will I hear Ishwari talking about the flute and the tinkling of anklets?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the s\u00e2dhak<\/em> state, a loving devotee\u2019s eyes are always thirsty for Sri Krishna\u2019s darshan<\/em> while his ears yearn for Sri Krishna\u2019s flute, tinkling anklets and armlets<\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The devotee has so much hope, desire and wishes. He always feels \u2013 when will I get to hear Sri Krishna\u2019s flute and tinkling of His anklets? When his desire becomes intense, the divine pastimes are revealed to him. Then he feels \u2013 Oh! I can hear the sweet tinkling of His gem studded anklets! <\/span>He is such an Ocean of mercy!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We feel as if he is coming closer, dancing to the tune of His flute, His anklets humming sweetly in unison. The anklets sound so sweet when they mingle with the strain of the flute. He is playing the flute intently, with His gaze fixed on His toes. He is dancing and coming nearer. I can hear His anklets ringing musically.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna\u2013Vallabh\u00e2 purport says that Sri Lil\u00e2shuk\u2019s extreme humility and longing aroused compassion in the supremely merciful Sri Krishna. He started approaching the poet. Sri Lil\u00e2shuk heard the sound of Sri Krishna\u2019s anklets and uttered this verse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Lil\u00e2shuk is saying – My Lord is unable to bear my sorrow and is immediately coming to give me darshan<\/em>. I can hear the musical sound of His anklets. He moves in dancing steps in perfect rhythm with His flute and hence the anklets ring ceaselessly! The resonating flute sings while the anklets keep beat (t\u00e2l<\/em>). The lotus feet dance, the anklets keep beat (like mridangam<\/em>) and the flute sings \u2013 all three together are forming a musical band! Sangeet Ratn\u00e2kar (a text in music) defines music as – <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018gitam v\u00e2dyana tath\u00e2 nrityan <\/span>trayam sangeetam \u2013 uchyate\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meaning – “Music is made up of singing and dancing with the accompaniment of an instrument.\u201d Hence, the three of them make up a complete and perfect musical band!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How is the resonance of the flute?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is so resounding that it rushes in ten directions and pervades all quarters. He is performing nir\u00e2jan<\/em> (\u00e2rati<\/em>) of His toes with the amorous looks in His restless eyes. It seems as if His toes are glowing under His sparkling gaze. The anklets that are keeping beat with the flute amuse him. Therefore, He is gazing at them. <\/span>His clear nails are reflecting the various colours of His eyes (white, pink and black). Hence they are shining brilliantly and are said to be reflecting the amorous look in His eyes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Srila Chaitanya d\u00e2s Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has said that Sri Lil\u00e2shuk is calling out in distress. Therefore, he is having a sphurti<\/em> that Sri Krishna is approaching him. He is playing the flute with His head bowed low. So His sparkling eyes are reflected in the toenails. <\/span>Hence, it appears as if they are being worshipped with lamps.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here we need to know that between sphurti<\/em> and s\u00e2ksh\u00e2tk\u00e2r <\/em>(actual meeting) there is a state called \u2018visphurti<\/em>\u2019. <\/span>It is also called \u2018mistaken s\u00e2ksh\u00e2tk\u00e2r<\/em>\u2019; a devotee feels deep relish as if he is actually seeing the Lord. Sometimes Sri Lil\u00e2shuk used to feel that he was really seeing Sri Krishna and would try touching Him, but could not. Then he would realize that it is not a \u2018s\u00e2ksh\u00e2tk\u00e2r<\/em>\u2019, but a \u2018visphurti<\/em>\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

We read about Sri Gopakum\u00e2r\u2019s visphurti<\/em> in part 2 of Sri Brihad-Bh\u00e2gavat\u00e2mritam. Srila Vishwan\u00e2th Chakravartip\u00e2d has explained the difference between sphurti<\/em> and s\u00e2ksh\u00e2tk\u00e2r<\/em> in detail in the eighth \u2018amrita-vrishti\u2019 (shower of nectar), which means, the eighth chapter of Sri M\u00e2dhurya-K\u00e2dambini.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
