<\/span><\/span>What do I do now? Whom do I tell? It is futile hoping to obtain Sri Krishna. Let\u2019s stop such useless talk and discuss something worthwhile instead. Oh! But He is in my heart! Then how can I give up talking about Him? He is a feast for the eyes and the mind! My humble thirst for Sri Krishna is ever increasing! 42.<\/span><\/p>\n

rila Kavir\u00e2j Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d explains that Sri Lil\u00e2shuk is meditating in his siddha<\/em>–deha <\/em>and is echoing Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s feelings in this state of mind. Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 is extremely anxious (udveg<\/em>). The Mah\u00e2jan has described the state of udveg<\/em> in the following manner \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

(Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 is saying) \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“The arrow of the Love-god Manmath (one who agitates the heart) has pierced my heart. I wonder it does not break into two pieces. I feel as if a fire of viraha<\/em> is raging inside me. My body is very tough, so it does not burn to ashes. How shall I explain my sorrow? I can neither die nor live in K\u00e2nu\u2019s absence. I feel my eyelids coming in the way when I behold His face. I console myself by looking at Him again. When I see the flower-grove of dalliance all aroused with flowers and when I hear the song of the cuckoo and humming of the bees, and when the breeze laden with the scent of M\u00e2lati touch me, I wonder why I am still living. Poet Govinda d\u00e2s says, let\u2019s go to Mathur\u00e2 and give K\u00e2nu this news.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At first Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 said in \u2018\u00e2veg<\/em>\u2019 \u2013 “What shall I do in these troubled times so that I may get Sri Krishna\u2019s darshan<\/em>?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

What is \u2018\u00e2veg<\/em>\u2019?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“When the mind is surging with emotions, we call it \u2018\u00e2veg<\/em>\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 experienced \u00e2veg<\/em> when Sri Krishna and Baladev were setting out for Mathur\u00e2. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“When Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 saw Sri Krishna on top of the chariot, all set to start for Mathur\u00e2, She screamed and fell in front of the chariot, She threw Her tearful gaze at Sri Hari\u2019s <\/span>lotus-face and fell in front of Balar\u00e2m holding a blade of grass in between Her teeth. In this manner what all emotions She aroused in the compassionate Sri Krishna!\u201d – [U.N. 13.40]<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 gazed at Her sakhis<\/em> and saw even they were anxious. She said, “To whom shall I tell my feelings? I find You in the same state as I. From Whom shall I seek advice?\u201d She looked worried.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

What is worry?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“\u2018Worry\u2019 is a state of the mind when we think about not getting what we desire and getting what we do not desire.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Example \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“During purva-r\u00e2g<\/em> Sri Vish\u00e2kh\u00e2 asked Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 \u2013 \u2018O R\u00e2dhe! Why are You not eating? I can see You are not feeling like doing anything! You are staring at Your nose, always lost in thinking and You are very silent. I think You are finding the whole word to be empty. So dear sakhi<\/em>! Have You become a yogini<\/em> (one who performs spiritual austerities and meditation) or viyogini<\/em> (one who pines for her lover)? Tell the truth!\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After some time She stopped worrying and entered a bh\u00e2v<\/em> called \u2018matih<\/em>\u2019[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

When She felt \u2018mati<\/em>\u2019 She said, “Expectation is the root cause of sorrow. Whatever I had done, anticipating to see Him, has been rendered futile. Enough of expectations!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now She felt amarsha<\/em>. She said, “No need to speak of That ungrateful Krishna. Let\u2019s not spend time in useless talk (Krishna-kath\u00e2<\/em>). Rather let\u2019s discuss something worthwhile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Just as She uttered these words, Sri Krishna\u2019s form appeared in Her heart, She was overcomr with agony and became restless like a doe pierced with arrow and said, “sakhi<\/em>! I can\u2019t bear any more \u2013 How painful! I had decided not to think of Him at all, but I have no option \u2013 He is right in my heart! He has captured the fortress of my heart and is now hurting me. He is my enemy, and assuming the form of Passion He is now piercing my heart with arrow dipped in ardour, what do I do?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In the very next moment Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 felt \u2018outsukya<\/em>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(The Gopis<\/em> told Uddhav as if to remind him of Pingal\u00e2\u2019s advice \u2013 “Expectation is the root cause of supreme sorrow, while inexpectation results in supreme happiness\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>– [Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam 10.47.47]<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In spite of knowing this we hoped to obtain Sri Krishna and now it has been dashed to the ground.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Hence Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 said in sorrow, “Stop thinking about how to forget Krishna! Alas! Alas! My thirst for Him is increasing every moment!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

What sort of thirst?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018kripana-kripan\u00e2<\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 more humble than humble. Thirst for whom?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

It is a thirst for That Sri Krishna Whose smile is sweeter than sweet, and Whose form is jubilant with the nectar of Eros. Now how shall I obtain Him? <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Mah\u00e2prabhu has read this verse during Gambhir\u00e2-leel\u00e2<\/em> and has Himself explained its sweetness in the following manner \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“In Krishna\u2019s viraha<\/em>, I am so full of udveg<\/em> that I can\u2019t make out how to obtain Him. You, my sakhis<\/em> too look so miserable! From whom do I seek advice?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Alas! Alas! sakhi<\/em>! What do I do? Where do I go? From where shall I get Krishna? Without Krishna, how will I survive?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

When Her (Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s) mind became still for a moment, She thought and entered the bh\u00e2v<\/em> of \u2018mati<\/em>\u2019. She remembered Pingal\u00e2\u2019s words and pondered on them.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(She said) – Let us adopt Pingal\u00e2\u2019s advice and give up all expectation of Krishna, for then we shall be happy. Stop this useless Krishna-kath\u00e2<\/em> and discuss something worthwhile, so that we may forget Krishna.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as She uttered these words, Krishna appeared in Her heart. She was shocked and told Her sakhis<\/em>, \u2018I want to forget Him; but He is lying in my heart! How can I renounce Him?<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s bh\u00e2v<\/em> is entirely different. She sees Krishna as the very embodiment of Passion. Her heart was agitated. She said, the passion that kills everybody has now entered my heart; this enemy does not let me forget Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Then She entered the mood of outsukya<\/em> that drowned all Her other feelings. She felt a great longing and could not control Her emotions. In sorrow, She chastised Herself.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(She said) \u2013 I am so lowly and fallen. I cannot survive a moment without Krishna just as a fish cannot live without water. His sweet smiling face is a delight to the eyes and it doubles my yearning for Him.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(She cried out) \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“Alas! Alas! O Krishna, the treasure of my life! Alas! Alas! O lotus-eyed one! Alas! Alas! O Ocean of divine qualities! Alas! Alas! O Shy\u00e2msundar! Alas! Alas! O Pit\u00e2mbaradhara! Alas! Alas! O Hero of the R\u00e2s<\/em>-sport!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

(The Lord said in Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s mood) –<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Where from do I get You? You tell me, I shall go there. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying this He rushed forth. Swarup got up and caught Him. Putting Him on His lap he brought Him back and seated Him, holding Him close.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>After some time the Lord came to His external senses and ordered Swarup to sing something sweet. He sang the songs of poet Vidy\u00e2pati and Geet-Govindam, hearing which the Lord was soothed.\u201d \u2013 (C.C. Antya.17.48-58)<\/span><\/p>\n

The method of studying Sri Krishna-Karn\u00e2mritam<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This is a slight indication of how to go about studying and relishing the verses of Sri Krishna-Karn\u00e2mritam. Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu has showed the way to the rasik<\/em>s of the world, by relishing it Himself. We should not only hear the verses, but plunge headlong in the depth of their ras.<\/em> Then we should lose ourselves in Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s mood \u2013 and ultimately \u2013 rush forth towards our Object of Desire agitatedly in a totally love-crazy state \u2013 crying out \u2013 “where from do I get You? You tell me, I shall go there\u201d. What is all this, to which realm does all this belong? If we stop to ponder, we cannot but be wonder-struck. This entire book is full of such longing, such extreme desire! A heart-wrenching cry of distress to get darshan<\/em> of Sri Krishna, the delight of our heart!!<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In the siddha-swarup<\/em> the poet is saying that my eyes are thirsty to behold Sri Krishna sporting divinely with my sakhi<\/em> Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2. In the s\u00e2dhak<\/em> state, Srila Lil\u00e2shuk is always yearning for Sri Krishna\u2019s darshan<\/em>. He has reached the state of anur\u00e2g<\/em>! This is a high level of prem.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

What is prem<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n

When a devotee feels very intense longing for Sri Hari, it is called \u2018prem<\/em>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The worldly people desire for wealth and popularity that is so temporary. Many such cheap things can satisfy cheap desire. However, Sri Hari is priceless. Therefore, other objects can never satisfy the desire for Sri Hari. Then \u2018jol binu jeno meen, duhkha pay \u00e2yuheen, ei moto krishna-binu bhakta\u2019<\/em>, that is, \u2018a devotee\u2019s state without Sri Krishna is just like that of a fish gasping without water.\u2019 All his desires and thirst centre around the lotus-feet of Govinda. Moreover Sri Lil\u00e2shuk is a devotee in the sweet mood of Vraja. His attraction and pining too is very very extreme \u2013 there is no way he can obtain it nor can he forget. One moment he is saying \u2013 stop Krishna-kath\u00e2,<\/em> discuss something else, the very next moment he is saying \u2013 my humble thirst for that sweeter-than-sweet Govinda is increasing more and more. He has composed some more similar verses that show his tremendous attraction for Sri Krishna\u2019s sweetness, such as \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“ma yata p\u00e2nthah pathi bheema-rathya digambarah ko\u2019pi tamala-neelah,<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

vinyasta-hasto\u2019pi nitamba-bimbe dhurtah sama-akarshati chitta-vittam.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Meaning \u2013 (Sri Bilvamangal Th\u00e2kur is telling some traveller proceeding towards the Yamun\u00e2) \u2013 “Oh p\u00e2ntha! (traveller)! Don\u2019t you go towards the Yamun\u00e2, there is a deep blue person standing with his left hand on his hip, He is very cunning \u2013 He snatches both chitta<\/em> (mind) and vitta<\/em> (wealth) simultaneously.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

These are uttering in the mood of Vrajab\u00e2l\u00e2s<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

A Vrajab\u00e2l\u00e2<\/em> is telling her sakhi<\/em> in the state of purva-r\u00e2g <\/em>\u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“O why did I go to fill water? As soon as I went to the banks of the Yamun\u00e2, I forgot my way and a blue whale came and swallowed me. His body is spilling over with ras<\/em>, He is dressed like a great dancer and His chud\u00e2<\/em> tilts to the left. He stands there in style, His artistic beauty overflowing with l\u00e2vanya<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

On His forehead He dons a tilak<\/em> of chandan<\/em> sparkling with fresh gorochan\u00e2.<\/em>[2]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> This tilak <\/em>nestles a dot that resembles the full moon. His face is surrounded by curly locks and He stands in the beautiful tribhanga<\/em> style, which is nothing but a noose to grab the hearts of the fair sex.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Srila Bhatta Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has stated in his Krishna-Vallabh\u00e2 purport that Sri Lil\u00e2shuk is expressing his tremendous thirst for Sri Krishna-darshan<\/em> in this verse. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018iha<\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/strong> means \u2018what do I do to quench this extremely great thirst? To whom do I tell? No one can help me. It is a big joke that someone like me is experiencing such a tremendous thirst.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The poet has used the word \u2018aho<\/em>\u2019<\/strong> in wonder and sorrow. It is useless to keep such high expectation. It is better to remain silent. The tide has turned against me. When He has turned His face away from me, how can any endeavour be fruitful? Better discuss some other topic so that my mind will be at peace. Even this is impossible, since my thirst for the all-attractive Sri Krishna is ever increasing. What sort of thirst? It is \u2018kripan kripan\u00e2<\/em>\u2019, very miserly \u2013 as soon as you satisfy it, it demands more.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

What is bhakti<\/em>?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“When we feel thirsty for Sri Krishna alone and do not desire anything else \u2013 it is called \u2018bhakti<\/em>\u2019. This \u2018prem<\/em>-thirst\u2019 is such that, the more we relish Krishna-m\u00e2dhuri<\/em>, the more it increases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>“trishn\u00e2 shanti nohe trishn\u00e2 badhe nirantar\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span>Meaning \u2013 “The thirst for Krishna can never be quenched, it is ever-increasing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>– (Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>This unquenchable thirst is the instrument to measure our relish of Sri Krishna-m\u00e2dhuri<\/em>. Hence Sri Lil\u00e2shuk has called this thirst as \u2018more miserly than the miser\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

How is Sri Krishna?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2018madhur-madhur-smera<\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/strong>, meaning, \u2018He is overflowing with the exultant ras<\/em> and is beautiful with soft sweet smiles\u2019. His sweet, sweet (meaning \u2018very sweet\u2019) smile is a prison \u2013 it imprisons our heart forever and ever. The poet says \u2018mano-nayana-utsave<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>, meaning, \u2018my thirst for that Sri Krishna, Who is a feast for the mind and the eyes, is ever increasing.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Sri Chaitanya d\u00e2s Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d says stop talking about Him and discuss something worthwhile. But He is lying in my heart, so how do I stop talking about Him? After all, He is \u2018madhura-madhura<\/strong><\/em>–smera-akare<\/em>\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 the One with sweeter than sweet, soft smiles.42.<\/span><\/p>\n
