Whose splendour has stolen the finery of dense clouds, Whose gait is lazy due to amour, Whose head is crowned with most intoxicated peacock-feathers, Whose lotus-face steals the heart, Who is stupefied by the side-long glance of Kamal\u00e2, Whose sweetness is the essence of all sweetness in all creation, we are searching for Such an Object. 47.<\/span><\/p>\n

rila Krishnad\u00e2s Kavir\u00e2j Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d is a supreme connoisseur of Divine ras<\/em>. He has presented an incredible explanation of the verse that is overflowing with Sri R\u00e2s-ras-m\u00e2dhuri<\/em> (the sweet ras<\/em> of R\u00e2s<\/em>–leel\u00e2<\/em>). He says that when Sri Krishna left the Gopis<\/em> during the R\u00e2s-leel\u00e2<\/em>, they went about searching for Him. On the way they found Shy\u00e2m\u2019s Sweetheart Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2, Whom He had earlier taken and later forsaken. They understood Her loneliness and viraha<\/em>. Therefore, Her dear sakhis,<\/em> who were also suffering similarly, consoled Her by saying, \u2018O R\u00e2dhe! It is not as if Sri Krishna has forsaken You entirely! He is somewhere near. He must be hiding in some flower-grove just to make fun of You. Can He ever forsake You? If we search, we will surely find Him. There is no use sitting here and lamenting. Come let\u2019s search for Him.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Srimati was comforted and accompanied them in their search for Shy\u00e2m. However again She entered a love-crazy state. Whenever She saw anything, She enquired about Her lost Treasure. She did not care whether it was moving or non-moving. This is the nature of the love-crazy Gopis<\/em>. When Sri Krishna disappeared with the most loving Srimati during the R\u00e2s<\/em>, the other Gopis<\/em> had been enquiring about Him from every single object they came across.<\/span><\/p>\n

“kwachit-tulasi kalyani govinda-charana-pryie<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

saha twa-ali-kulair-vibhrad-drishtaste\u2019ti-priyo\u2019chyutah.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meaning \u2013 “O supremely fortunate Tulasi, who are dear to Govinda\u2019s lotus-feet! Shy\u00e2msundar dons you even when the bees surround you. Have you seen which path He has taken?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, we see that Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s sakhis<\/em> had asked about the Divine Couple from the doe \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

“Dear sakhi<\/em> Harini (doe)! Did Krishna come here along with His Sweetheart? Did His all-mesmerizing beauty delight your eyes? (Now we know why your eyes are so large.) We feel He is somewhere near, for this place is fragrant due to His garland of kunda-flowers that are coloured with the saffron from His Sweetheart\u2019s breasts.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Once when Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu sat in a garden on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Neel\u00e2chal, He was absorbed in this leel\u00e2<\/em>. He asked Tulasi plant, the creepers and the doe about Sri Krishna \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“O Tulasi, M\u00e2lati, Juthi, M\u00e2dhavi, Mallik\u00e2 creepers, did your beloved Krishna come here? Please tell me about Krishna, O please save me! For you are my sakhis<\/em> and are dear to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“When He did not get any reply, He thought to Himself, they are Krishna\u2019s maids, therefore they are afraid to tell me (Krishna may have forbidden them.) Then He saw the does that looked as if they were spellbound by Krishna\u2019s fragrance and He said \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Say, Doe! Has not Sri Krishna come here with Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 to delight you? We are R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s close friends and we can get His perfume from far. Therefore, we are absolutely sure of His whereabouts.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fragrant garland that Krishna dons is made of the sweet-scented kunda flowers sprinkled with the saffron from R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s bosom. The breeze is laden with its fragrance. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When the doe too did not respond, the Lord concluded that Krishna had deserted her as well, She too was suffering and the pain had stupefied her, therefore she was silent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this manner, Srimati is wandering in anxiety with Her sakhis<\/em> and enquiring about Krishna from the trees, creepers and does. She is feeling as if they are asking her \u2013 \u2018O my dears! For whom are you searching in this dense dark forest, in the dead of the night?\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/span><\/em> \u2013 (suppressing their true feelings) \u2013 He is a Thief. So we\u2019ll not name Him. We are searching for That Crook. You know Him very well. If you have seen Him, better speak up. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taru-lat\u00e2<\/span><\/span>[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0 <\/span>\u2013 Aye, aye, you need not speak more. We got it. That Cheat must be making love to some Gopi<\/em> just now; may be He has forgotten all about you. We think it is below your dignity to search for Him. So, do not spend your energy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/em> \u2013 (with arrogance and we-don\u2019t-care attitude) \u2013 Oh we are very much aware of all this. But then, may be the sidelong glances of Laxmi has stupefied Him and rendered Him motionless? We know it all. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018kamal\u00e2-ap\u00e2nga-udagra-prasanga-jadam\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>\u2013 \u2018Kamal\u00e2\u2019 (Laxmi) serves Him \u2013 how does it matter to us? Do you know why we are searching for Him? We told you \u2013 He is a thief, He has run away after stealing our gem-like hearts. So we are searching for Him. Otherwise, what do we care for Him?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taru-lat\u00e2<\/span><\/span> \u2013 We don\u2019t believe you. According to us, He is very decent. Why do you defame Him?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/span><\/em> \u2013 (shake their heads and laugh in scorn) \u2013 Oh really! How well you know Him! He is not a thief! Then who on earth is a thief? There is no robber who is as experienced, bold and enterprising as He is. He is not an ordinary crook. Hundreds of rainbows decorate the clouds in the sky and countless thunderbolts protect them like security guards. But He doesn\u2019t spare even them. \u2018bahula-jalada-chh\u00e2y\u00e2-chouram\u2019<\/em><\/strong>,<\/em> which means, He has stolen the splendour from the clouds that are more secure than anyone in this world, and enjoy so much independence! He is so audacious! Compared to them we are but helpless girls. So it is not surprising at all that He has run away after stealing our precious hearts. It is not just one incident. The Love-god, moon, lotus, swans, deer, fish, flowers and leaves are the sweetest of all. That thief has stolen sweetness one by one from all of them, and has expanded the empire of His sweetness; do you know this? \u2018madhurima-parip\u00e2ka-udrekan\u2019<\/em>!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Taru-lat\u00e2<\/span><\/span> \u2013 Well, well! Now we have understood! But if He is such a dangerous thief, then isn\u2019t it better He stays away from you? Why do you want to see Him? And one more point \u2013 How will you see Him? If you do not see Him, how will you catch Him?<\/span><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/span><\/em> \u2013 There is no way He can hide. He wears a crown of peacock-feathers! You can recognize from even from far \u2013 \u2018mada-shikhi-shikha-lilottamsam\u2019<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taru-lat\u00e2<\/span><\/span> \u2013 (sarcastically) \u2013 How smart! You may see Him, but how will you grab Him? You think He\u2019ll stand quietly, while you rush towards Him? Is it possible? Can you catch a thief so easily? As soon as He sees you, He will volt with full speed!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/span><\/em> \u2013 No, dear, no, that won\u2019t happen. He is a thief, no doubt, but not an ordinary one. He is a crook indeed, but an amorous one. He is so over laden with amour that He has become lazy \u2013 He\u2019s not swift \u2013 He moves with such lethargic gait, that He has very less chance of speeding away \u2013 \u2018vil\u00e2sa-bhara-\u00e2lasam\u2019<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taru-lat\u00e2<\/span><\/span> \u2013 Okay, we accept what you say; but on one hand, He is dark, on the other hand, the forest is thick and dense. If He hides in some dark corner of a flower-grove, how will you spot Him?<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/span><\/em> \u2013 Really, don\u2019t you know? There is no way He can hide in the dark. He is too alluring. He is as brilliant as crores of moons. He cannot hide in the darkness \u2013 darkness hides from Him! There is no doubt about it \u2013 \u2018manogya-mukha-ambujam\u2019<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Taru-lat\u00e2<\/span><\/span> \u2013 All right, it is true. But what\u2019s the hurry? You yourselves said it is impossible for Him to hide \u2013 so He will surely get caught. In the morning, You will catch Him in Vraja itself. Is it nice for decent girls to roam around searching for Him at this time of the night? You are weak, while He is strong. You already said He is bold and daring \u2013 in this situation will you manage to catch Him? What if He catches you in stead and takes you off somewhere? Then you\u2019ll land in great trouble \u2013 so better not search for Him at night, resume your search in the morning. <\/span><\/p>\n

Gopis<\/span><\/span><\/em> \u2013 O my dear, don\u2019t you fear for us! He will never do it. He is stupefied by the sidelong glace of Kamal\u00e2 \u2013 \u2018Kamal\u00e2-ap\u00e2nga-udagra-prasanga-jadam<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 <\/em>\u2013 and any way He is lazy. So there is nothing to fear. If you have seen Him, better tell us. <\/span><\/p>\n
