O King! Sri Krishna, surrounded by countless cattle and Gopa boys entered Sri Vrind\u00e2ban which had beautiful lakes overflowing with clean sharad<\/em>-water[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. Vrind\u00e2ban was fragrant with fully bloomed flowers such as the lotus, and soft perfume-laden breeze was always blowing there.1.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Madhupati[2]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Sri Krishna was accompanied by sakh\u00e2s<\/em> such as Shrid\u00e2m and Subal, and elder brother Sri Baladev. When He entered Vrind\u00e2ban He admired the trees laden with flowers and intoxicated bees hovering around them humming musically. The woods were melodious with birds such as<\/span> parrots and cuckoos singing joyously. The rivers, lakes and mountains were all beautiful. In this manner Sri Krishna entered Vrind\u00e2ban and blew into His mesmerizing flute.2.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sage Srila Shukadev has already described the beauty of the monsoon in Vrindab\u00e2n, Sri Krishna\u2019s sweet sports with the sakh\u00e2s<\/em> during this season, and the beauty of the Sharad season in the previous chapter (Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam 10.20). In this chapter he is describing Govinda\u2019s special pastimes, that is, His bh\u00e2v<\/em>-full flute-song and its impact on the Braja-maidens who are in purva-r\u00e2g<\/em>. This is the Venu-Geet!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These verses draw a very beautiful picture of Sri Vrind\u00e2ban. In the second verse, the word \u2018Madhupati\u2019 also means \u2018the Lord of the Spring season\u2019. This indicates that the beauty of Sharad is mingled with the loveliness of the spring season. Earlier the lakes of Vrind\u00e2ban such as P\u00e2van sarovar<\/em>, Kusum Sarovar, Sri Radhakund-Shy\u00e2mkund were flooded with water in the monsoon season. Now with the advent of Sharad, the water had got rid of it muddiness and was sparkling like crystal. In addition, attractive flowers were blooming in the lakes \u2013 such as \u2013 kumud<\/em>, kahl\u00e2r<\/em>, lotus and the blood-red lily. Hosts of swans were wandering happily in the lotus-forests. The trees looked grand with fresh green leaves. The woods were fragrant with the intoxicating aroma of various flowers such as bakul<\/em>, shef\u00e2li<\/em> and gandha-r\u00e2j<\/em>.\u00a0 <\/span>The banks of the Yamun\u00e2 were resounding with the laughter of the land-lotus and the love-sporting Kadamba. On every sweet flower in every sweet kunja<\/em> intoxicated sweet bees were humming sweetly. Vrind\u00e2ban was musical with the song of the cuckoos, the spellbinding dance of he peacocks and the cooing of different attractive birds. Girir\u00e2j Govardhan looked gorgeous with cascading waterfalls and colorful fruits and flowers. Cool, soft perfume laden breeze charmed the surrounding.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Madhupati\u2019 also signifies that since Sri Krishna is Madhupati, His sports-ground Brajadh\u00e2m is also full of \u2018madhu<\/em>\u2019 \u2013 honey. Honey is cascading from the breeze, the sky, the trees and creepers, and the sun and the moon that pours honey-like radiance. The laughter of the blossoms, the juice of the fruits, the warbling of the birds, and the dance of the peacocks \u2013 all are laden with hone. “madhur\u00e2dhi-pater akhilam madhuram<\/em>\u201d \u2013 they are offering all their sweetness unto the service of the Source of Sweetness Sri Govinda. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today Sri Vrind\u00e2ban that is eternally served by Vasanta<\/span>[4]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, is celebrating the advent of Sharad. It looked as if there was a great grand feast of honey! The more Shy\u00e2msundar proceeded for cattle-grazing the more Vrind\u00e2ban held Him spellbound. Everywhere He saw an incomparable marvelous beauty!\u00a0 <\/span>Mother Nature had arranged the most charming and alluring beauty in Vrind\u00e2ban to entertain Him. Somewhere in the woods a bird called sweetly \u2013 \u2018bou-kath\u00e2-kao<\/em>\u2019<\/span>[5]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. When Govinda heard it, His heart that was already palpitating, started dancing in full swing. When he gazed at a lake, He saw a Khanjan-couple kissing one another and exchanging sweet nothings. The bees were humming ceaseless. When He heard and saw all this, Shy\u00e2mal-Kishor<\/span>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> did not feel a bit like cattle-grazing. His heart seemed drunk \u2013 it was in the grip of some doe-eyed Gopa-beauties. He had seen the sweet laughter in their desire-filled restless eyes. Their lovely faces were floating in His gaze like a picture. Especially one face, that belonging to His Precious One that had resounded His heart in vociferous soundless language \u2014 He simply could not forget Her \u2013 although He tried His best. Consequently, He moved away from the sakh\u00e2s<\/em>, and sat alone on an altar around a tamaal<\/em> tree. He placed His left foot on the right one and thought about Her. Shy\u00e2m got lost in Her meditation! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here we must remember that although the pastimes between the Gpois and Gopin\u00e2th seem like the love affair of mundane lovers, it is strictly not so. Here the devotees are absolutely free of any material desire. It is a meeting between bhakta<\/em> and bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>. Their unification is the supreme truth, pristine pure and extremely sweet. It is a subject that blessed saints, the topmost desire-free devotees meditate on. Sri Bhagav\u00e2n is ras<\/em>-full, hence He performs countless leel\u00e2s<\/em>. Leel\u00e2<\/em> cannot exist without ras<\/em>. Ras<\/em> is the soul of leel\u00e2<\/em>. He is relishing \u2013 so He is \u2018ras<\/em><\/span>[7]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019. He is also the One Who relishes ras<\/em>. He is Rasamay, therefore it is natural for Him to want to relish ras<\/em>. The Brahman Whom the gy\u00e2nis<\/em> worship is without any characteristic, He is ras<\/em>-less; He has no desire at all. However, the Bhagav\u00e2n Whom the bhaktas<\/em> worship is not like this, He has a colossal desire to relish the prem<\/em> of the devotee. He is infinite \u2013 His desire to relish ras<\/em> too in infinite. He is an ocean of bliss, and this ocean holds in its heart intense craving. These are all His leel\u00e2s<\/em>. So we say He is \u2018Leel\u00e2may\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What do we mean by \u2018leel\u00e2<\/em>\u2019? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Bhagav\u00e2n has two-fold activities \u2013 (1) karma<\/em> and (2) leel\u00e2<\/em>. When He lessens the burden of Mother Earth by killing the asurs<\/em>, we call it \u2018karma<\/em>\u2019, and when He spontaneously and easily performs some activity simply for the sake of pleasure, we call it \u2018leel\u00e2<\/em>\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Leel\u00e2<\/span><\/em> can be classified into three \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. srishti-leel\u00e2<\/span><\/em> \u2013 the divine pastime called \u2018creation\u2019. It takes place when He plays with His external potency, M\u00e2y\u00e2 Shakti.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. sams\u00e2r-leel\u00e2<\/span><\/em> \u2013 when Sri Bhagav\u00e2n plays with Jiva Shakti, that is intermediary to internal potency and external potency, the result is material pastimes or sams\u00e2r-leel\u00e2<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. nitya-leel\u00e2<\/span><\/em> \u2013 these leel\u00e2s are \u2018nitya<\/em>\u2019 or eternal. In this, Sri Bhagav\u00e2n plays with His internal potency or Swarup Shakti. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Swayam Bhagav\u00e2n Sri Krishna has no connection whatsoever with creation and the material world. Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita says \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    “turiyo krishner n\u00e2hi m\u00e2y\u00e2r sambandha<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Meaning – “Sri Krishna is transcendental, and He is not related with the material energy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Swayam Bhagav\u00e2n Sri Krishna performs His eternal pastimes only in Dw\u00e2rak\u00e2, Mathur\u00e2 and Brijdh\u00e2m, of which His Braja-leel\u00e2s<\/em> are the most exquisite. This is due to the fact that the associates of Braj are completely oblivious to His gigantic majesty and consider Him only as \u2018mor putra, mor sakh\u00e2, mor pranopati<\/em>\u2019 \u2013 \u2018my son, my friend and the beloved of my soul\u2019 \u2013 (Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita ). Therefore Braja-leel\u00e2s<\/em> are so extremely sweet. Amongst these, the loving pastimes of Sri Gopin\u00e2th with the Gopis are the sweetest, since they overflow with erotic ras<\/em>. The Gopis are actually Love personified and this prem<\/em> is nothing but the characteristic of His very Own Hl\u00e2dini Shakti. In Braja-leel\u00e2<\/em>, we see that the relation between Him and the Gopis is extra-marital (parakiy\u00e2<\/em>) in nature \u2013 hence the immense attraction. As a result we call them \u2018samarth\u00e2 n\u00e2yik\u00e2<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018self-independent beloveds\u2019. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
