Govinda plays the flute everyday while cattle-grazing. The cattle frolic in the pastures while the flute plays in the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">kunjas<\/em>. The Gopis hear it while engaged in their household chores. Everyday they somehow control their hearts. But today the flute was truly behaving strangely. The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Radha-viraha<\/em> that was raging deep within His heart was manifesting itself through each pore of the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">venu<\/em>. Its strain was maddening. It was tormenting the sky and the air. Whoever heard the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">venu<\/em> felt He was calling him or her. Especially it echoed \u2018R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019. All day and night it played only one name \u2013 \u2018Radha\u2019. Therefore Srimati said in reproach \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">&#8220;Dear flute! I beg of you repeatedly, please don\u2019t remain on Shy\u00e2m\u2019s lips calling out the name \u2018R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019 \u2018R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019. You are on the face of a cheat and shout \u2018R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019 \u2018R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019, thus putting me in the bad books of the elders. A cheat never gives up His crooked ways, but why do you fall prey to Him? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">Your sweet sound does not let me stay at home, and my eyes flow incessantly. The first time you played I lost my honor and virtue \u2013 all I have now is this life.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">It is good you played now, for at last I lost everything\u2014I am telling you for sure. Poet Uddhab d\u00e2s says \u2013 whosoever hears the flute-song gives up all fear of the society.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">As it is, the maidens of Braja are helpless, in addition they were overwhelmed with <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">prem<\/em>, and therefore they could not bear it any more. Shukadev said \u2013 when they heard the flute-song \u2018<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">smara<\/em>\u2019 or lust arose in their hearts. The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Brajagopis<\/em> have no lust. They are full of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v-ras<\/em> that is the supremely condensed form of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">prem<\/em>. Lust and love are opposite of each other. Lust is ugly like a piece of iron, since it is tainted with the desire for sense-gratification; on the other hand, love is radiant due to the desire to please Krishna, hence it dazzles like gold that has undergone the purification process a hundred times. Lust stinks like rotten hell, while love is as fragrant as the perfumed Nandan-k\u00e2nan<\/span><a style=\"mso-footnote-id: ftn1;\" name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"mso-special-character: footnote;\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt; font-family: Verdana; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">. This is why even great sages like Uddhav wish to have such lust.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">&#8220;The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">prem<\/em> of the fair sex of Braja is called \u2018<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">k\u00e2m<\/em>\u2019 (lust). As a result, loving devotees of the Lord such as Sri Uddhav crave for such lust. They always pray for the hankering felt by the Gopis due to their love for Sri Krishna.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: right;\" align=\"right\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u2013 (Sri Bhakti-Ras\u00e2mrita-Sindhu 1.2.285)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: right;\" align=\"right\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">The Brajab\u00e2l\u00e2s\u2019 <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">prem<\/em> is pristine pure and without a hint of lust. Externally they do try to embrace Sri Krishna and kiss Him, but that is to please Him ultimately, and not for self-pleasure. Consequently their love is termed \u2018lust\u2019. We may question\u2014the word \u2018lust\u2019 sounds bitter, and arouses impure thoughts; the word \u2018<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">prem<\/em>\u2019 reminds us of purity, then why do the scriptures term the Brajagopis\u2019 prem that has such high standard as \u2018lust\u2019? Sri Bhakti-Ras\u00e2mrita-Sindhu answers \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">&#8220;The special love of the Brajadevis is inexpressibly sweet and assumes the form of love-making, therefore the wise term it as \u2018<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">k\u00e2m<\/em>\u2019. It is a form of bhakti and the Gopis are famous for possessing bhakti in this mood. Outwardly it appears the same as lust, however internally there is no similarity whatsoever. This is a profound mystery. Had the scriptures called their love simply as \u2018love\u2019 then we would not have learnt that they express their love through love-making, and how spiritual and pure is their love-making.
