“These loving pastimes of Sri Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2-Krishna are extremely confidential, and those who are in servile and parental moods cannot conceive them. The sakhis<\/em> alone are entitled to enter these pastimes. They arrange these leel\u00e2s<\/em> and without them it is impossible for these pastimes to become enjoyable. The sakhis<\/em> arrange the pastimes and they are the ones who relish them. No one other than the sakhis<\/em> can partake of these leel\u00e2s<\/em>. Therefore it is necessary for a devotee who wishes to serve R\u00e2dh\u00e2-Krishna in the kunja<\/em>, to surrender unto the sakhis<\/em>, and follow in their footsteps. There is no other way to achieve this goal.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni has five types of sakhis<\/em> \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“t\u00e2stu vrind\u00e2vaneshwary\u00e2h sakhyah panchavidh\u00e2 mat\u00e2h,<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

sakhyashcha nityasakhyashcha k\u00e2shchana,<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

priyasakhyashcha parama-preshtha-sakhyashcha vishrut\u00e2h.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Meaning – “Sri Vrind\u00e2vaneshwari has five types of sakhis<\/em> \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>sakhi<\/em> (girl-friends)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>nitya-sakhi <\/em>(eternal sakhi<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>pr\u00e2n-sakhi<\/em> (beloved sakhi<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em>priya-sakhi<\/em> (loving sakhi<\/em>)<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>param-preshtha-sakhi <\/em>(supremely loving sakhi<\/em>)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Param-preshtha sakhis<\/em> such as Lalit\u00e2 and Vish\u00e2kh\u00e2 are samasneh\u00e2<\/em>, that is, they have equal love for both R\u00e2dh\u00e2 and Krishna. In spite of this, they are proud of the fact that they belong only to Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2. The pr\u00e2n-sakhis<\/em> and nitya-sakhis<\/em> such as Kasturi and Mani-manjari are R\u00e2dh\u00e2-sneh\u00e2dhik\u00e2 <\/em>that is they love Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 more than they love Sri Krishna. They are also called manjaris<\/em>. This is a special Kaliyug since Sri Sri Gour\u00e2nga Mah\u00e2prabhu has appeared in this yug.<\/em> The Gosw\u00e2mis such as Sri Rupa, San\u00e2tan, and Raghun\u00e2th etc. have performed bhajan<\/em> following in His footsteps. They have instructed us to perform bhajan<\/em> under the subjugation of R\u00e2dh\u00e2-sneh\u00e2dhik\u00e2 manjaris<\/em> only. This manjari-bh\u00e2v-s\u00e2dhan\u00e2 <\/em>is the highest spiritual level that a living being can possibly attain by means of his spiritual practice. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Anyway, when the Braja-ramanis<\/em> who were overwhelmed with bh\u00e2v<\/em>, heard the flute-song played by the Sri Krishna, the Supreme Sorcerer, they pretended as if it was not affecting them and started describing the sweetness of the flute to their soul mates. This \u2018I-don\u2019t-care\u2019 attitude is their \u2018sanch\u00e2ri bh\u00e2v\u2019<\/em> or passing mood. They were trying to show that although the flute is very sweet indeed, it was not having any impact on them. The Brajab\u00e2l\u00e2s<\/em> are full of mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em>. Their love is like an ocean. In this ocean many bh\u00e2vs <\/em>rise and fall like wavelets. They are \u2013 boredom, sorrow, humility, don\u2019t-care attitude etc. <\/span><\/p>\n

“These sanch\u00e2ri bh\u00e2vs<\/em> cause exultation in the ocean like love and then disappear.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, the Braja-beauties are not only extremely loving, but they are also treasure troves of bashfulness, self-control, seriousness and many other excellences. It is just that Shy\u00e2msundar\u2019s sweet flute is so captivating that it has managed to arouse extreme madness in even such exalted women as the gopis<\/em> and have destroys their virtue and self-control! <\/span>The maddening flute was causing such upheaval of emotions in the gopis <\/em>that sometimes they felt like yoginis<\/em><\/span><\/span>[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, at other times like viyoginis[2]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em> and ultimately like unm\u00e2dinis[3]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em>. They had lost appetite and sleep due to deep anxiety. They gaze fixedly at fresh clouds, chant the name of Shy\u00e2m and weep under the pretext of smoke entering their eyes. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“nobin p\u00e2user meen marana n\u00e2 j\u00e2ne.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Bengali proverb.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Meaning – “A fish of the new rainy season does not know death.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The state of the gopis<\/em> was exactly the same. They have already plunged in the Shy\u00e2m-love. They were full of expectations. They had not calculated what was in store for them \u2013 joy or sorrow. Now they were burning so much that they were near to death. In the beginning they had explained very nicely to their hearts \u2013 “O innocent heart! Why are you so restless? Control yourself. I am a chaste wife belonging to a decent family. I live in my husband\u2019s home. Someone is playing a flute in some faraway forest, why should you care? Why are you so much agitated to see Him? And suppose you do get to meet Him, then what will you do? You stand to gain nothing. He is a moon in the sky, while you are a dwarf.\u201d But alas! Their hearts understood nothing. Day by day, they became so restless and vociferous that the gopis<\/em> reached a point of no return. Now they simply set themselves afloat in the river of ras.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna\u2019s all-mesmerizing flute-song and all-captivating sweet face carrying the flute filled the minds of the Brajadevis <\/em>as they started to describe the venu-m\u00e2dhuri<\/em> to their dear sakhis<\/em>. Of the gopis<\/em>, Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni is Krishnamayi<\/em>, since \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“krishnamayi, krishna j\u00e2r antare b\u00e2hire, j\u00e2h\u00e2 j\u00e2h\u00e2 netra pore, t\u00e2h\u00e2 krishna sphure.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Meaning – “Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni is full of Sri Krishna; He manifests Himself wherever Her gaze falls.\u201d \u2013 (Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita)<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna is naturally within Her and outside Her. In addition to this, when She desired to describe the sweet flute-song to Her dear sakhi,<\/em> \u2018n\u00e2shakan smaravegena vikshiptamanaso nripa<\/em> (Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam)\u2019 – Her heart was completely agitated by the highly excited waves of passion rising in Her ocean-like mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The gopis<\/em> were immersed in fathomless bh\u00e2v<\/em>. Profound ecstasy pervaded their heart and body. Their voices were choked. They were covered with tears and goose bumps. Thus these mah\u00e2-bh\u00e2vavatis <\/em>revealed that they were the living embodiments of Sri Krishna-prem.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

When Shukadev Gosw\u00e2mi remembered their bh\u00e2v-\u00e2vesh[4]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/em> he too was immersed in the same sentiment. In this state of immense bh\u00e2v,<\/em> he describes to Mah\u00e2r\u00e2j Parikshit the sweet form of Murali-Manohar<\/span>[5]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> revealed in the hearts of the mah\u00e2-bh\u00e2vavati gopis.<\/em>3-4.<\/span><\/p>\n

Translation<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna was groomed like an exquisite dancer, with a stunning crown of peacock-feathers and flower-buds adorning His ears. He wore a golden yellow robe and vaijayanti <\/em>garland round His neck. He was filling the pores of the flute with the nectar of His lips, and His sakh\u00e2s<\/em> were glorifying Him in various manners. Thus He entered Shridh\u00e2m Vrind\u00e2ban that was already decorated with His beautiful holy foot-prints. 5.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geet\u00e2mritalesh Explanation<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

he<\/span> mah\u00e2-bh\u00e2vavati<\/em> Braja-beauties started describing the all-mesmerizing flute-song to their param-preshtha<\/em> sakhis<\/em>, yet they were so full of mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em>, and Sri Krishna\u2019s sweet pastimes and stunning beauty overwhelmed them so much that they were stupefied in bliss. Therefore they were unable to describe Govinda\u2019s all-captivating flute-song. The all-knowing Shukadev Gosw\u00e2mi sat in meditation and saw that sweet Govinda Who revealed Himself in the hearts of the mah\u00e2-bh\u00e2vavati gopis<\/em> and described Him to Mah\u00e2r\u00e2j Parikshit in this verse. It is one of the ambrosial verses from Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam that describe Sri Krishna\u2019s m\u00e2dhuri<\/em>. The Vaishnav-toshani explanation of this verse quotes another verse from Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“yan- darshayat\u00e2 grihitam, vism\u00e2panam swasya cha soubhagarddheh param padam bhushanabhushanam martya-leeloupayikam swayogam\u00e2y\u00e2balam -angan-iti.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

In \u2018San\u00e2tan-Shiksh\u00e2\u2019 of Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita we find Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu beholding the sweetly gorgeous Sri Krishna and reciting this shlok<\/em>. He has rendered a breathtaking explanation of this verse as follows \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>Sri Krishna<\/span><\/a> has many pastimes, of which His pastimes as a human being are the best. His original form is like that of a human being. In this form He is dressed like a cowherd<\/span><\/a> boy. He carries a flute in His hand, and on the threshold of youth. He is groomed like a dancer-hero. All this is just suitable for His pastimes as a human being.<\/span><\/p>\n

My dear San\u00e2tan<\/span><\/a>, listen how gorgeous Sri Krishna is! Even a minute portion of Sri Krishna<\/span><\/a>‘s handsomeness can merge all three worlds in the ocean of love and attract all living entities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna<\/span><\/a>‘s internal, spiritual energy, called Yogm\u00e2y\u00e2, who is a transformation of pure goodness, reveals His brilliantly beautiful form to the world. This jewel like form is the most confidential treasure of the devotees. This form is manifested from Krishna<\/span><\/a>‘s eternal pastimes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna\u2019s beauty is so extraordinary that it attracts even Him<\/span><\/a> and forces Him to crave for His own sweetness. He is the eternal repose of all excellences such as beauty, ras<\/em>, etc. In fact He is called \u2018swa-soubh\u00e2gya\u2019<\/em> (own good fortune).<\/span><\/p>\n

Ornaments caress that wonderful body, but the transcendental body of Krishna<\/span><\/a> is so beautiful that it beautifies the ornaments He wears. Therefore Krishna<\/span><\/a>‘s body is said to be the ornament of ornaments. Enhancing the wonderful beauty of Krishna<\/span><\/a> is His three-curved (tribhanga)<\/em> style of standing. Above all these beautiful features, Krishna<\/span><\/a>‘s eyes dance and move obliquely, acting like arrows to pierce the hearts of Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni and the gopis<\/em>. When the arrow succeeds in hitting its target, it agitates their hearts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita, Madhya, 21.101-105)<\/span><\/p>\n

“Sweetness is the quintessence of divinity, and it is present in the maximum degree only in Brijdh\u00e2m. Shukadev<\/span><\/a> Gosw\u00e2mi, the son of Vy\u00e2sdev, has described these pastimes of Krishna<\/span><\/a> throughout Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam. Hearing these descriptions, the devotees become inebriated with divine prem.<\/em>” – (Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita, Madhya, 21.110)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Srila Shukadev Muni is very much acquainted with the extreme sweetness of this verse. After all \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Sri Vy\u00e2s-nandan<\/span>[6]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, who loves the devotees of Sri Vishnu, was attracted by the great qualities of Sri Hari, and therefore He studied this great text called Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam (for the benefit of the devotees).\u201d – (Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam, 1.7.11)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained this verse in his Krama-sandarbha commentary that\u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Vy\u00e2s-nandan Srila Shukadev Muni was merged in relishing the bliss of the Impersonal Brahman. He was afraid that he would be entangled in M\u00e2y\u00e2; therefore he remained in his mother\u2019s womb for twelve years. Then Vy\u00e2sdev prayed to Sri Krishna to give him the blessing that illusion would never grasp him. This assured Shukadev. However as soon as he emerged from his mother\u2019s womb, he deserted his home. When he was wandering naked in the forest, he looked so resplendent that the wood-cutters saw him and mistook him to be a ghost. They approached Vy\u00e2sdev and sought a remedy from him. Vy\u00e2sdev understood that they were referring to his son and concluded that the only way to attract his Impersonalist son was to recite the nectarine Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam. He taught the wood-cutters this very shlok<\/em> that was drenched with Sri Krishna\u2019s extraordinary sweetness. When the wood-cutters recited this verse to him, Srila Shukadev Muni ran towards them. The frightened wood-cutters sought refuge with Sri Vy\u00e2sdev. Then Vy\u00e2sdev made Shukadev sit near him and made him study the entire Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam. Thus, the verses that describe Sri Krishna\u2019s sweet beauty are so glorious.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Sri Krishna<\/span><\/a> is so exalted that He is more attractive and more pleasing than anything else. He is the greatest of all ras<\/em>. By His own strength, He forces one to forget all other ecstasies.<\/span><\/p>\n

A slight whiff of His sweetness can very easily make us forget the happiness derived from material enjoyment, material liberation and mystic or yogic perfection. Thus the devotee is bound by Krishna<\/span><\/a>‘s mercy and His exceptional power and qualities.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we fall in love with Krishna<\/span><\/a> because of His sweet qualities which are the essence of all sweetness, no logical argument or scriptural injunctions can bind us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2013 (Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita, Madhya, 24.38-40)<\/span><\/p>\n

“Krishna<\/span><\/a> has unlimited transcendental qualities. The devotees are attracted by His exceptional beauty, mellows and fragrance. Different devotees are attracted by different qualities. For example, the four child-sages [Sanak<\/span><\/a>, San\u00e2tan<\/span><\/a>, Sanandan<\/span><\/a> and Sanat-kum\u00e2r] were attracted to the lotus feet of Krishna<\/span><\/a> by the aroma of the Tulsi that had been offered to Him by His devotees. On the other hand Sri Shukadev Gosw\u00e2mi was attracted by His sweet pastimes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>\u2013 (Sri Chaitanya-Charit\u00e2mrita, Madhya, 24.43-46)<\/span><\/p>\n

Poet Jaydev has written in Sri Geet-Govindam \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“chandraka-ch\u00e2ru-mayura-shikhandaka-mandala-valayita-kesham,<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

prachura-purandara-dhanu-ranu-ranjita-medura-mudira-suvesham.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bengali Mah\u00e2jan poet has translated this verse from Sri Geet-Govindam very sweetly in the following manner \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“Who tied His chud\u00e2<\/em> so high and decorated it with peacock-feathers such that it now steals the hearts of all fair maidens? It appears as if someone has brought the rainbow down from the sky and it is now beautifying this new fund cloud (Shy\u00e2msundar\u2019s hair). Moreover, who entwined the chud\u00e2 <\/em>with garlands of m\u00e2lati<\/em> and mallik\u00e2<\/em>? It looks as if the treasure of the gods, River Gang\u00e2, is flowing in curves around the Nilgiri Mountain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Poet Govinda d\u00e2s has drawn inspiration from Jaydev \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“The pinnacle of His chud\u00e2 <\/em>is decorated with peacock-feathers and further beautified with garlands of m\u00e2lati<\/em>. Its fragrance maddens both the male and female bees that hover around it humming loudly. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

O my sweet friend! Who says K\u00e2mdev (the Love-God) is \u2018Ananga\u2019<\/em> (body-less)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n


<\/span><\/p>\n

[7]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>? I saw him with my own eyes under the love-sporting Kadamba tree standing like a hero of all that is passionate. In deed, he looked most stylish like a dancing hero.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

He was darting so many poisonous arrows from His quiver like eyes that He shot from beneath His eyebrows that He used as bows. I am but a woman in love; how can I tolerate their impact when the arrows are attacking the core of my heart? In addition He dons gem-studded crocodile-fashioned ear-rings swinging restlessly on His ears! Poet Govinda d\u00e2s says \u2013 yes! He is verily the hypnotizer of m\u00e2dan dev \u2013 no one other than Sri Madan-mohan!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the chud\u00e2<\/em> of this Ramani-mohan[8]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/em> is bending slightly to the left. Not only this, it is quivering emotionally in the breeze. This form of Mohan<\/span>[9]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> is so full of bh\u00e2v<\/em>, that when bh\u00e2vinis<\/em> see Him, myriads of emotions flood their hearts. When they see His chud\u00e2 <\/em>they feel that it is sending a of ras<\/em>-invitation to Madan-mohan-mana-mohini<\/span>[10]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> <\/span>Sri Bh\u00e2nu-nandini<\/span><\/span>[11]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> to come and take Her place next to Mohan. <\/span><\/p>\n
