He <\/span>Whose extremely mischievous side-long glances dart <\/span>like <\/span>brilliant rays that slow down the graceful movements of the Vraja-beauties<\/span>;<\/span> Whose gaze is playing in the wavelets<\/span>1<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> of <\/span>nectarine l\u00e2vanya<\/span>; Who is adored by the looks of Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni<\/span>; Whose <\/span>most favourite sporting place is the bank of the K\u00e2lindi, Who is the source of all the incarnations of <\/span>the <\/span>Love-god, Who is the empire of all sweetness \u2013 we worship That blue-complexioned Kishor.3.<\/span><\/p>\n

ereafter, Sri Lil\u00e2shuk received a sphurti<\/em> of Sri Krishna accompanied by Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni, the chief Gopi<\/em>. They were surrounded by the sakhis<\/em> who were serving Their Lordships. <\/span>Earlier he had heard of Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s anur\u00e2g<\/em> and good fortune from Chint\u00e2mani. He now thinks of himself as Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019s sakhi<\/em> and is expressing his wish to another sakhi<\/em> with a similar desire \u2013 “ami vayam b\u00e2lam aradhnumah<\/em>\u201d-<\/strong> “We shall worship the Kishor<\/span>2<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Krishna\u201d, which means, that we shall serve Him by offering t\u00e2mbul<\/em><\/span><\/span>3<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, by fanning Him etc. Here the word \u2018b\u00e2l\u2019<\/em> indicates Kishor. In the previous verse, the poet has described Krishna as \u2018Kishor\u2019. <\/span>Later on also, throughout the text, he has described His pastimes only as a Kishor. Sri Krishna\u2019s eternal form is that of a Kishor. The eternally Kishor Krishna sometimes expresses \u2018b\u00e2lya<\/em><\/span><\/span>4<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019 and at other times \u2018pauganda<\/em><\/span><\/span>5<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019 in order to relish the parental and friendly moods respectively. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Krishna made his childhood fruitful by relishing parental love. He made His pauganda<\/em> worthwhile by relishing the mood of friendship. He performed the R\u00e2s<\/em>\u2013dance with R\u00e2dh\u00e2 and the other Gopis<\/em>. Thus, He relished the essence of ras<\/em> to His heart\u2019s content. In this manner He enriched His \u2018kaishor\u2019<\/span>6<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From Smriti and Rhetoric also, we may conclude that Sri Krishna shows the \u2018b\u00e2lya<\/em>\u2019 stage right up to 16 years since he has such a beautiful and tender body. Hence, in this verse as well, the word \u2018b\u00e2lam<\/em>\u2019 refers to the Kishor Sri Krishna. If we translate \u2018b\u00e2l<\/em>\u2019 as \u2018b\u00e2lak<\/em>\u2019 (child), then the words \u2018k\u00e2m\u2013avat\u00e2r<\/em>–ankuram<\/em><\/span><\/span>7<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019 become inconsistent. In the same way, wherever Srip\u00e2d has used the words \u2018b\u00e2l<\/em>\u2019, \u2018shishu<\/em>\u2019 etc., they are supposed to mean \u2018Kishor\u2019 only<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is this Kishor like? Well, He is \u2018nilam<\/em>\u2019 \u2013 like beryl. <\/span>He is blue\u2013 complexioned and the embodiment of the erotic ras<\/em>. <\/span>The colour of the erotic ras<\/em> is \u2018Shy\u00e2m<\/span>8<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019 – Hence the word \u2018nil\u2019<\/em> has been used. <\/span>Sri Bharat Muni has written in N\u00e2tyash\u00e2stra \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>“The erotic ras<\/em> is blue in colour.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna is Shring\u00e2r<\/em><\/span><\/span>9<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> personified. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(A friend told R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni) \u2013”Dear friend R\u00e2dhe! Sri Krishna, Who is charmed by the Gopis<\/em>, is engrossed in performing sports as if He is the Shring\u00e2r-ras <\/em>personified.\u201d \u2013 (Geet\u2013Govindam)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Sri Bhatta Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained \u2018nilam\u2019<\/em> –<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Sri Krishna\u2019s bodily splendour is like the fully bloomed blue\u2013lotus \u2013 hence He is the whole essence of Shring\u00e2r\u2013ras<\/em>.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The gopis<\/em> are saying – “Because of His beauty alone we have become His maid servants. <\/span>He is as beautiful as He is \u2018Surasik<\/em><\/span><\/span>10<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>\u2019. That’s why He is always present on the floor of the R\u00e2s<\/em>\u2013dance on the banks of the K\u00e2lindi. The banks of the K\u00e2lindi are like a dance-floor, so they are very dear to him. <\/span>He always performs pleasure\u2013sports in the court yard surrounded by the M\u00e2dhavi creepers that steal the heart of M\u00e2dhav (Krishna); hence we call this pastime \u2018R\u00e2s Lila\u2019<\/em>.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The word R\u00e2s<\/em> is derived from the root word \u2018ras<\/em>\u2019. <\/span>Hence, for Rasik\u2013Shekhar Sri Krishna, Who is Shring\u00e2r<\/em> personified, and is always eager to relish ras<\/em>, the R\u00e2sa-sthali<\/em><\/span><\/span>11<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> is His favourite haunt \u2013 therefore He always resides there. Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2 adores this \u2018Kishor \u2013 God\u2019 (Sri Krishna) with Her sidelong glances \u2013 “laxmi<\/em> \u2013 kat\u00e2ksha \u2013 \u00e2dritam<\/em><\/strong>\u201d.<\/em> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
