To understand <em>mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em> we first need to learn a few facts about <em>anur\u00e2g.<\/em> Srila Vishwan\u00e2th Chakravartip\u00e2d has written in his \u00c2nanda-Chandrik\u00e2 purport &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p>&#8220;<em>Anur\u00e2g<\/em> has 3 aspects &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>bh\u00e2v<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>karan<\/em> (instrument)<\/li>\n<li><em>karma<\/em> (action)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Bh\u00e2v<\/span><\/em><\/strong> &#8211; When a lover reaches the height of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>, she loses herself completely in relishing Sri Krishna&#8217;s sweetness &#8211; so much so &#8211; that she fails to distinguish between Sri Krishna and herself. All she experiences is &#8211; \u2018relish&#8217;. This is the <em>bh\u00e2v <\/em>of the lover in <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Karan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <\/span><\/strong>&#8211; \u2018<em>Karan<\/em>&#8216; means \u2018instrument&#8217; &#8211; an object by which we can do some work. A lover can relish Sri Krishna&#8217;s sweetness with the help of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>. Hence <em>anur\u00e2g <\/em>is an instrument. When the lover reaches the zenith of <em>anur\u00e2g, <\/em>he relishes Sri Krishna&#8217;s sweetness of the highest degree. Thus we see that maximum <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> causes maximum relish.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Karma<\/span><\/em><\/strong> &#8211; It means \u2018action&#8217;. <em>Anur\u00e2g<\/em> performs an action &#8211; it makes us relish Sri Krishna&#8217;s sweetness. When we reach the height of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>, we relish the greatest sweetness and when we relish maximum sweetness, we experience <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> in its most brilliant form. Therefore in this case, \u2018relishing&#8217; is the action and <em>anur\u00e2g <\/em>performs this action.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When the lover reaches the highest point of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>, she expresses it to the utmost level. <em>Anur\u00e2g<\/em> reveals maximum <em>bh\u00e2v,<\/em> becomes the best instrument to relish Sri Krishna&#8217;s sweetness and makes her relish the sweetness to the highest degree. When she experiences these aspects of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>, she feels the most complete bliss. We call this state of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> as \u2018<strong><em>swa-samvedya-dash\u00e2&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has stated in Lochan-Rochani purport-<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When a lover experiences <em>anur\u00e2g,<\/em> she expresses ecstasy. There are eight symptoms of ecstasy. When the lover reaches the height of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>, she may express five, six or all the symptoms simultaneously and that also in to the greatest extent. Then we call such <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> as <em>\u2018<\/em><strong><em>prak\u00e2shito<\/em><\/strong><em>&#8216;<\/em> or \u2018expressive&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has also stated in the same purport &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> increases the lover expresses her love to the greatest degree. After all love is &#8211; when she considers immense pain as pleasure if it makes Sri Krishna happy. So we deduce that her love has reached the zenith when she considers the greatest pain as the highest pleasure. When the lover attains this stage of <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em>, we call such <em>anur\u00e2g <\/em>as <strong>\u2018<em>y\u00e2vad-\u00e2shraya-vritti&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The brides of honorable families find nothing more painful than forsaking the noble path of life. They are ever ready to bear the fire or consume poison to guard their honor. They can very easily and happily give up their lives for this purpose. The Vrajabeauties have forsaken their near and dear ones and the noble path effortlessly to serve Sri Krishna. Giving up righteous conduct is the pinnacle of sorrow, yet they have experienced supreme bliss in doing so. Therefore this proves that their <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> is showing <em>\u2018y\u00e2vad-\u00e2shraya-vritti&#8217;.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now let us decipher the definition of <em>mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v <\/em>from the above mentioned facts.<\/p>\n<p>Srila Rupa Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has defined <em>mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em> as &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When <em>anur\u00e2g<\/em> attains &#8211;<\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li><em>swa-samvedya-dash\u00e2<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>prak\u00e2shito<\/em> (is expressive)<\/li>\n<li>shows <em>y\u00e2vad-\u00e2shraya-vritti<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>We call it <em>\u2018mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v&#8217;<\/em>.&#8221; &#8211; (U.N.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even the queens of Lord Mukunda (such as Rukmini and Satyabh\u00e2m\u00e2) cannot attain this <em>mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em>; we can find it only in the Vraja<em>devis<\/em>.&#8221; &#8211; (U.N.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the lover&#8217;s anur\u00e2g reaches its height and attains a special state, we call it mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v.
