“In the ascending order, mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em> is of two types –<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. rudha<\/em> (heightened)<\/em><\/li>\n
  2. adhirudha <\/em>(very much heightened)” – (U.N.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \n

    Rudha mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em> – It is the first stage of mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v<\/em>.<\/p>\n

    \n

    “When a lover in mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v,<\/em> expresses tears, goose flesh and other symptoms of ecstasy, we call this stage as \u2018rudha mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v’<\/em>. The lover should express five, six or all the symptoms simultaneously and to the maximum extent”. – (U.N.)<\/p>\n

    The gopik\u00e2s<\/em> are mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v-vati<\/em>1<\/sup><\/a>. When they feel rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em>, they express the following characteristics –<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. They cannot tolerate the eye-lids (can also mean – a time span as short as the blinking of an eye) and<\/li>\n
    2. Even the nearby people experience agitation in the heart;<\/li>\n
    3. They consider a kalpa<\/em> as a moment<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      <\/em><\/p>\n

      \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 4. Are sad because they apprehend sorrow even when Sri Krishna is in great joy;<\/p>\n

      \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 5.Although the gopis<\/em> are not in illusion or ignorance, they forget everything including themselves,<\/p>\n

      \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 6.They consider a moment as long as a kalpa.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Now Let us understand each point in detail.<\/p>\n

      They cannot tolerate the eye-lids<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      When the mah\u00e2bh\u00e2v-vati gopis<\/em> feel rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em>, they cannot stand the eye-lids during Sri Krishna-darshan<\/em>! The gop-sundaris<\/em> curse the creator for making eye-lids. They feel -“Ohh! It would have been so much better if he had not created eye-lids, for them we could have seen our Beloved uninterruptedly, to our heart’s content.” Of course, the gopis<\/em> are not created by Brahm\u00e2ji, yet they consider themselves as cowherd women made by Lord Brahm\u00e2. This enables them to relish Sri Krishna’s sweetness more nicely. When they curse Brahm\u00e2ji in the mood of an ordinary milk-maid, we can comprehend how much they yearn for Sri Krishna’s darshan<\/em>.<\/p>\n

      Even the nearby people experience agitation in the heart<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      When the lover expresses rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em>, even the people present nearby experience an agitation in the heart due to the immense impact of rudha-bh\u00e2v.<\/em> When the gopis<\/em> took darshan<\/em> of Sri Krishna during the solar- eclipse in Kurukshetra, everybody present there had experienced an agitation in their hearts. This was the effect of the rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em> of the gopis<\/em>. This is just like the surging waves of the sea that make all nearby objects oscillate.<\/p>\n

      They consider a kalpa as a moment<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      When the gopis unite with Sri Krishna they experience supreme bliss and even a kalpa passes so quickly that they feel they had seen Him only for a moment. Although the gopis had danced with Sri Krishna for one Brahma-r\u00e2tri (during the r\u00e2s-leel\u00e2), they had felt as if it was shorter than the blink of an eye. This is due to their rudha-bh\u00e2v that arouses in them an extremely intense longing to sport with Shy\u00e2msundar. They are so much absorbed in His divine loving pastimes that they find now kalpa equal to one nimesh2<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n

      They are sad because they apprehend sorrow even when Sri Krishna is in great joy<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      When Sri Krishna is greatly happy, they are sad because they expect something bad to happen.<\/p>\n

      “When we see our dear one in trouble, we fear for him.” – (Ancient Indian Proverb)<\/p>\n

      No one fears when one sees our dear one rejoicing. However the Vraja-beauties who are in rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em> grieve when they see Sri Krishna in a very happy mood, since they apprehend sorrow. When Sri Krishna places His foot on the bosom of the gopis<\/em>, He is immensely happy, yet the gopis<\/em> are sad, because they think that their breasts are hard while His feet are so soft, and they fear that He may be hurt. Fearfully they place His foot very slowly on their boom. The last verse of Gopi-Geet proves this point.<\/p>\n

      Although the gopis are not in illusion or ignorance, they forget everything including themselves<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      Material people may forget their belongings when they are in illusion, however although the gopis<\/em> are free of such negative factors, they forget everything including themselves. This is a remarkable characteristic of rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em>. It happens because the gopis<\/em> are entirely lost in Sri Krishna’s beauty and excellences.<\/p>\n

      They consider a moment as long as a kalpa<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      The gopis<\/em> suffer the pangs of viraha<\/em> so much that even one moment of separation from Sri Krishna seems like one kalpa<\/em> to them. It is the characteristic of rudha-bh\u00e2v<\/em> that the lover feels one kalpa<\/em> equal to one moment when she unites with Sri Krishna and one moment as one kalpa <\/em>when she is separated from Him.<\/p>\n
