Like Brahman, <em>ras <\/em>is inconceivable and inexpressible. We can only realize <em>ras<\/em> and cannot arrive at it with logic. <em>Ras<\/em> transcends all thought-processes and gives us relish when our <em>chitta<\/em> has attained the state of pure goodness and shines brilliantly<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Those who do not have the desire to relish <em>ras<\/em> can never realize <em>ras<\/em>. The author of S\u00e2hitya-Darpan says &#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;<em>Ras<\/em> is beyond the material world and it can be realized only by a <em>rasik<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Alank\u00e2r-Koustubh says &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;<em>Ras<\/em> creates magic&#8221; and &#8220;A feeling of \u2018WOW!!&#8217; is the soul of <em>ras<\/em>; if, after relishing something, we do not say \u2018WOW!!&#8217; then it is not <em>ras<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">What do we mean by wonderment?<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Suppose we see something so gorgeous that we have never seen before or we hear something so beautiful that we have never heard before, then we feel a kind of joy and our heart somersaults. Consequently, unknown to us, our eyes too bulge out. This is \u2018wonderment&#8217;. We call this thrilling experience as \u2018<em>ras<\/em>&#8216;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Alank\u00e2r-Koustubh also states &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\"><\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;If some favorable objects (or incidents) come together to create such a joyful thrill in the heart, that stupefies our external as well as internal senses &#8211; then we can call such a delightful experience as <em>\u2018ras&#8217;<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Srila Rupa Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d too has written &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;A magical inexpressible relish that shoots across a heart blazing with goodness and is beyond of all human perceptions, it is \u2018<em>ras&#8217;<\/em>.&#8221; &#8211; (B.R.S.2.5.132)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>Ras<\/em> is commonly of two types &#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1. material <em>ras<\/em> &#8211; we can feel this <em>ras<\/em> with our heart<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2. transcendental <em>ras<\/em> &#8211; realized by the soul<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_369\" style=\"width: 115px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/kunjeshwari.com\/sweetblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/rupa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-369\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-369\" title=\"rupa\" src=\"http:\/\/kunjeshwari.com\/sweetblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/rupa.jpg\" alt=\"Srila Rupa Goswami - the topmost rasik poet\" width=\"105\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Srila Rupa Goswami - the topmost rasik poet<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When talented writers compose literature about worldly characters then the reader relishes some <em>ras.<\/em> We call this as \u2018material <em>ras<\/em>&#8216;. The rhetoricians call this as \u2018close to relishing Brahman&#8217;. However the authors of transcendental <em>ras<\/em>-literature flatly denounce this and state &#8211; &#8220;The <em>ras<\/em> in material literature target the heart of material people, hence it is full of M\u00e2y\u00e2 (illusion) and contains the three <em>gunas<\/em> (modes of nature). Naturally it is short-living. There is no way we can gain complete bliss from this <em>ras.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has clearly written in Priti-Sandarbha (110) &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;Worldly passion can give only slight pleasure, since if we analyze deeply, material emotions ultimately result in sorrow. Therefore we cannot respect material literature that gives rise to worldly <em>ras.<\/em>&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><br class=\"spacer_\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Srila Kabi Karnapur&#8217;s opinion is &#8211; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;<em>Ras<\/em> is of three types &#8211; <\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\" type=\"1\">\n<li><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>pr\u00e2krita <\/em>(material) e.g. the <em>ras<\/em> found in the novel \u2018M\u00e2lati and M\u00e2dhav<\/span><\/span><a name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8216;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>apr\u00e2krita <\/em>(transcendental) e.g. the <em>ras <\/em>reposing in Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2-Krishna<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em>\u00e2bh\u00e2s<\/em> (shadow of <em>ras<\/em>) e.g. <em>ras<\/em> existing in an inappropriate place or situation&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Srila Vishwan\u00e2th Chakravartip\u00e2d has explained this statement as follows &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;We classify <em>ras<\/em> into three types and say that material <em>ras<\/em> is a type of <em>ras<\/em> just to satisfy the fans of material literature. Actually there is no relish in material novels. Those who think that worldly events can arouse <em>ras<\/em>, they are mistaken. It is certain that mundane heroes and heroines will result in either ash, worms or stool &#8211; then how can we get <em>ras<\/em> in them? Also when we analyze the truth we see that that the worldly poets are so ignorant that they present their heroes and heroines as \u2018beautiful like flowers, youthful and fragrant&#8217;. Such falsehoods only fuel our hatred all the more than arousing <em>ras<\/em>. This is the reason why the author (Srila Kabi Karnapur) who is a <em>rasik<\/em> has not cited a single poem composed by material poets as examples; rather everywhere he has only described transcendental <em>ras<\/em> and has given likewise examples. Those who have had the good fortune to relish blissful transcendental divine <em>ras<\/em>, find material <em>ras<\/em> as worthless and horrible. But of course, material literature offers more happiness than the pleasures of the flesh.
