Formation of ras\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

B<\/span>efore we go into the study of ras<\/em>-formation, we need to become familiar with certain terms such as vibh\u00e2v, anubh\u00e2v, s\u00e2tvic bh\u00e2v, vy\u00e2bhich\u00e2ri, sth\u00e2yi bh\u00e2v<\/em> etc. Let us learn these terms and understand their definitions properly.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vibh\u00e2v<\/span><\/em><\/strong> <\/em>\u2013 Alank\u00e2r-Koustubh has defined it as \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“It is the cause of ras<\/em>. It arouses ras in us\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n

Vibh\u00e2v<\/em> is classified into two types \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00e2lamban vibh\u00e2v<\/em><\/strong> <\/em>(=what supports ras<\/em>) \u2013 Sri Krishna arouses ras<\/em> in the devotee\u2019s heart. Also, the devotee\u2019s passion for Sri Krishna causes ras <\/em>to arise in the s\u00e2dhak\u2019s heart. Here we call Sri Krishna as the \u2018subject<\/strong>\u2019 and the devotee as the \u2018shelter<\/strong>\u2019 of ras<\/em>. Thus \u00e2lamban vibh\u00e2v <\/em>is divided into two \u2013 subject (Sri Krishna) and shelter (the devotee).<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. uddipan vibh\u00e2v<\/em><\/strong> (=what excites ras<\/em>) \u2013 Sri Krishna\u2019s sweet qualities, activities, decorations, laughter, fragrance, flute, anklets, conch-shell, footprints, home, cattle-grazing pasture, Tulsi, devotees, feasts \u2013 all excite ras<\/em> in us. So they are \u2018uddipan vibh\u00e2v\u2019<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Anubh\u00e2v<\/span><\/em><\/strong> \u2013 Alank\u00e2r-Koustubh states \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    “\u2019anu<\/em>\u2019 means \u2018later\u2019 or \u2018what follows\u2019. After ras<\/em> arises in our heart, we express some symptoms externally. These are \u2018anubh\u00e2v<\/em>\u2019. We also call them as \u2018ras-<\/em>action\u2019.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

    Example \u2013 The subject (Sri Krishna) and the devotee (shelter) express some external characters due to their passion for each other, such as \u2013 loving glances, smiles etc. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Some expressions are loud and are easily visible \u2013 such as \u2013 dancing in joy, singing, yelling, stretching, roaring, yawning, sighing heavily, not caring how others react to our love, salivating, loud laughter, hiccupping, smiling etc. These reveal our heartfelt passion. We call these anubh\u00e2vs<\/em> as \u2018udbh\u00e2swar anubh\u00e2v<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 (openly visible).\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    “When the anubh\u00e2vs<\/em> (symptoms of ras<\/em>-relish) are not so visible, we call them as \u2018s\u00e2tvic anubh\u00e2v\u2019<\/em><\/strong> or simply \u2018s\u00e2tvic-bh\u00e2v<\/em><\/strong>\u2019<\/em>.\u201d \u2013 ( B.R.S.)<\/span><\/p>\n

    Srila Rupa Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has listed eight s\u00e2tvic anubh\u00e2vs<\/em> in B.R.S. \u2013<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. stupefaction<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. perspiration<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. goose flesh<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. faltering voice<\/span><\/li>\n
    5. shivering<\/span><\/li>\n
    6. paleness<\/span><\/li>\n
    7. tears<\/span><\/li>\n
    8. doom\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Vy\u00e2bhich\u00e2ri bh\u00e2v<\/span><\/em><\/strong> <\/em>\u2013 Alank\u00e2r-Koustubh explains \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      “This bh\u00e2v<\/em> is not constant; it lends color to the permanent bh\u00e2v<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

      B.R.S. says \u2013 “it is a \u2018passing\u2019 bh\u00e2v<\/em> \u2013 so we also call it \u2018sanch\u00e2ri<\/em>\u2019 or passing bh\u00e2v.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

      Let us understand it better. Just as waves rise and fall in the sea, thus making it more beautiful, some small bh\u00e2vs<\/em> appear and disappear while we continue to remain in our own permanent bh\u00e2v<\/em>. These waves of bh\u00e2<\/em>v lend color to the permanent bh\u00e2v. <\/em>There are 33 passing bh\u00e2vs<\/em> in total \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

So we find this bh\u00e2v<\/em> only in the grandmother, in-laws etc. who are the side-characters in the events of madhur ras<\/em>. \u2013 (U.N.13.88-89)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
