Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu has thus instructed Srila Rupa Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d \u2013<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“We can classify rati<\/em> into five types depending on the class of the devotees \u2013<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. sh\u00e2nta rati <\/em>\u2013 for sh\u00e2nta<\/em> devotees<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. d\u00e2sya rati \u2013<\/em> for devotees in servitude<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. sakhya rati <\/em>\u2013 for the devotees in friendly mood<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  4. v\u00e2tsalya rati<\/em> \u2013 for the devotees in the parental mood<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  5. madhur rati<\/em> \u2013 for the devotees in conjugal mood<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    Hence there are five types of ras<\/em> \u2013 sh\u00e2nta, d\u00e2sya, sakhya, v\u00e2tsalya<\/em> and madhur.<\/em> These five ras<\/em> are the chief amongst all the ras<\/em> present in Sri Krishna-bhakti.<\/em>\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    There are some more ras<\/em> other than these five ras.<\/em> They are h\u00e2sya<\/em> – laughter (humor), adbhut<\/em> – extraordinary, veer <\/em>\u2013 velour, karun<\/em> \u2013 sad, roudra<\/em> \u2013 anger, vibhatsa<\/em> \u2013 horror, bhaya<\/em> \u2013 terror. These seven ras <\/em>are secondary .The devotee can be situated in any of the five primary ras<\/em> \u2013 that is \u2013 he may be in the mood of a servant, parent etc. Then, due to some reason, these seven ras<\/em> may enter his heart like a guest and when the cause is removed, these ras<\/em> too take their leave. Sh\u00e2nta<\/em> etc. are permanent ras.<\/em> They remain always in the particular devotee\u2019s heart. For example, there is a sad situation. Then a devotee feels karun ras<\/em>. When the sorrowful situation disappears, the karun ras <\/em>too vanishes. Same is the case with h\u00e2sya ras<\/em> (laughter) etc. We should remember that the five principal ras n <\/em>ever leave a devotee situated in that ras.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    “The five primary ras<\/em> are permanent in a devotee. The seven other ras <\/em>are secondary. They come and go like strangers.\u201d \u2013 (C.C.Madhya.19.161)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

    The seven secondary ras <\/em>appear and disappear in the dear associates of Sri Bhagav\u00e2n.<\/em> They are the \u2018sanch\u00e2ri\u2019<\/em> or passing moods. Hence we shall not discuss them here. Rather, let us learn in detail about the primary ras.<\/em> Those devotees, who wish to study the seven secondary ras <\/em>in detail, are requested to read the \u2018Uttar-part\u2019 of Bhakti-Ras\u00e2mrita-Sindhu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
