He only has one knowledge \u2013 that He is Parabrahman and param\u00e2tm\u00e2. The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh<\/em><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u00e2<\/em><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">nta<\/span><\/em>-devotee is only aware of the original form of Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>.\u201d \u2013 (C.C.Madhya.19.177-178)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has written in his Priti-Sandarbha \u2013<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">&#8220;The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta-<\/em>devotee is on the borderline and his <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">bhakti<\/em> too is on the margin. This means that a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotee is not exactly a devotee. His devotion does not fall inside the boundary of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">bhakti.<\/em>\u201d \u2013 (P.S.84.) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Sri N\u00e2rad-Panchar\u00e2tra describes \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span>&#8220;ananya mamat\u00e2 vishnou mamat\u00e2 premasangat\u00e2,<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span>bhaktirityuchyate bhishmaprahl\u00e2doddhavan\u00e2radaih.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Meaning &#8211; &#8220;Mah\u00e2jans such as Bhishma, Prahl\u00e2d, Uddhav and N\u00e2rad have called it \u2018<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">bhakti<\/em>\u2019 only when we do not feel anything else to be \u2018mine\u2019 \u2013 we know that Sri Vishnu alone is our sole possession and we love Him dearly.\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has stated \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">&#8220;The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotees do not consider Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> as their own. A relation with Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> is not inspired in their heart. Therefore it is logical that they do not feel senses of belonging with respect to Him.\u201d \u2013 (P.S.96)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">The servants and friends have a relation with Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>; hence they feel He belongs to them. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotees feel that Sri<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> is <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u00e2tm\u00e2r\u00e2m<\/em> and self-satisfied, hence He cannot feel hungry or thirsty. He is absolute in all respects, so how can He require any <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sev\u00e2<\/em>? Srila Rupa Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has mentioned in Bhakti-Ras\u00e2mrita-Sindhu that the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotees are close to the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">d\u00e2sya<\/em>-devotees. In fact the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">d\u00e2sya<\/em>-devotees are the best friends of the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotees. He has quoted a <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotee as saying \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">&#8220;The supreme Brahman is a mass of fire while the living entity is its spark. He is intensely conscious effulgence. When will I massage His feet?\u201d \u2013 (B.R.S. 4.8.20)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained this statement as follows \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">&#8220;Here \u2018intense\u2019 implies the form of Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>, otherwise how can he mention \u2018feet\u2019? \u2018Conscious\u2019 refers to \u2018<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sach-chid\u00e2nanda<\/em>\u2019 (eternal, conscious<\/span><span><a style=\"mso-footnote-id: ftn1;\" name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"mso-special-character: footnote;\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #800080; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and blissful).<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Thus we see that the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotee is firmly established in the supreme Brahman Who is <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sachchid\u00e2nanda. <\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Here we see that the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotee wants to massage Sri<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> Bhagav\u00e2n\u2019s<\/em> feet \u2013 it is not because he wishes to please the Lord with his <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sev\u00e2<\/em>. Rather, he hopes to gratify his own senses by His touch. He wants to become happy by touching the beautiful form of Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>. On the other hand, the devotees who are in the mood of servants wish to serve the Lord to give Him pleasure. Hence they are <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u2018bhaktas\u2019<\/em> in the true sense.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color: transparent; border: #ece9d8;\">\n<div>\n<h1 class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">W<span>hat forms <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras<\/em> in the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta<\/em>-devotee?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">&#8220;When a yogi heard the P\u00e2nchajanya<\/span><span><a style=\"mso-footnote-id: ftn2;\" name=\"_ftnref2\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"mso-special-character: footnote;\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #800080; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><sup>2<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">, he was so overjoyed that the end of his robe fell to the ground. He shook his head and shed copious tears. He was full of goose flesh. All the vows he had undertaken broke. His regulative principles were lost. When the brilliant dark blue mascara-like Lord appeared in front of him, he was so extremely happy and behaved in such a manner that displayed utter contempt for<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>his own position (as that of a yogi).\u201d \u2013 (B.R.S. 3.1.42)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">Let us examine this case and determine which ingredients have come together to form <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras.<\/em> The <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">vibh\u00e2vs<\/em> (causes) are as follows \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0cm;\" type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">vishay\u00e2lamban<\/em> \u2013 the subject of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras<\/em> \u2013 the four-armed form of Parabrahman<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">\u00e2shray\u00e2lamban<\/em> \u2013 the shelter of <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras<\/em> \u2013 the yogi who is in <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta-ras<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; tab-stops: list 36.0pt;\"><span><span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">uddipan<\/em> \u2013 what excites <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras <\/em>\u2013 the resounding P\u00e2nchajanya<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">What symptoms (<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">anubh\u00e2v<\/em>) did he show? The end of his cloth rolled on to the ground, he shook his head etc. He also displayed <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">s\u00e2tvic-bh\u00e2v <\/em>(not-so-loud) such as tears and goose flesh. His <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sanch\u00e2ri-bh\u00e2v<\/em> (passing moods) was joy, great surge of emotion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">These <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">vibh\u00e2v, anubh\u00e2v, s\u00e2tvic<\/em> and <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sanch\u00e2ri<\/em> mingle with the permanent (<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sth\u00e2yi-bh\u00e2v)<\/em> of the yogi<\/span><span><a style=\"mso-footnote-id: ftn3;\" name=\"_ftnref3\" href=\"#_ftn3\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"mso-special-character: footnote;\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #800080; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><sup>3<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"> and create <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">sh\u00e2nta-bhakti-ras.<\/em> The yogi relishes this <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; text-align: justify;\">\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color: transparent; border: #ece9d8;\">\n<div>\n<h4 class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><span>What are the symptoms that the <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">shaanta-<\/em>devotee expresses?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\">&#8220;They glorify the excellences of Sri <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>, chant names such as Parabrahman, Param\u00e2tm\u00e2 etc. They know that Brahman-realization is a blissful state; hence they show interest in Him. They concentrate on the tip of their nose; try to become <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">avadhuts<\/em>, practice<em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"> mudr\u00e2s<\/em> such as <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">gy\u00e2n-mudr\u00e2<\/em>.<\/span><span><a style=\"mso-footnote-id: ftn4;\" name=\"_ftnref4\" href=\"#_ftn4\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span style=\"mso-special-character: footnote;\"><span class=\"MsoFootnoteReference\"><span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; color: #800080; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"><sup>4<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: book antiqua,palatino;\"> They bow and glorify Sri Hari. Their not-so-visible signs are \u2013 tears, gooseflesh. What arouses <em style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\">ras<\/em> in them? The fact that Parabrahman is almighty, calm, impartial and He can assume extraordinary forms.
