2.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>verbal quality \u2013 sweet speech that delights the auditory sense is the \u2018verbal quality\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>mental quality \u2013 gratefulness, forgiveness and kindness are the mental qualities.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Names<\/span><\/strong> – Sweet sounds such as \u2018R\u00e2dh\u00e2\u2019 and \u2018Krishna\u2019 are the \u2018names\u2019 that excite ras <\/em>in a devotee of madhur ras.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Characteristics<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 We can categorize them into two \u2013 (1) anubh\u00e2v<\/em> (2) leel\u00e2.<\/em> We shall discuss the \u2018anubh\u00e2v<\/em>\u2019 separately, since it is a long topic. Here let us see the leel\u00e2s<\/em> that arouse madhur ras<\/em>. Sri Krishna\u2019s characteristics are \u2013 playing the flute, R\u00e2s<\/em>-sports, ball-game. Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s characteristics are \u2013 graceful-ness, playing the veen\u00e2<\/em>, music, cooking. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Associated elements <\/span><\/strong> <\/span>– We can classify them into two \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    1. lagna<\/span><\/em>1<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> \u2013 Sri Krishna\u2019s lagna <\/em>are \u2013 the flute-song, sound of the horn, singing, body-fragrance etc. Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s lagna <\/em>are \u2013 song of the veen\u00e2s<\/em>, music and body-fragrance.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. sannihita<\/span><\/em>2<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> \u2013 Sri Krishna\u2019s sannihita<\/em> are \u2013 flower-garland, gunj\u00e2-m\u00e2l\u00e2<\/em>, saffron anointments. Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s sannihita<\/em> are \u2013 flower-garlands, veen\u00e2<\/em>, dear friends such as Lalit\u00e2 and Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2kund.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Some marginal objects<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 moonlight, clouds, lightning, spring season, sharad season, full moon, breeze, peacocks, cuckoo, he-parrot and she-parrot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      What are the reactions of a devotee in madhur<\/em><\/strong> ras<\/em> (Anubh\u00e2v<\/em><\/strong>)?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

      In madhur ras<\/em> we have three types of anubh\u00e2vs<\/em> \u2013 alank\u00e2r, udbh\u00e2swar, v\u00e2chik<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      1.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Alank\u00e2r<\/span><\/em>3<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> \u2013 The commonly maidens are at the height of youthfulness, and they are always absorbed in their life and soul \u2013 that is \u2013 Sri Krishna. Their heart is attacked with all sorts of bh\u00e2vs<\/em>, called \u2018alank\u00e2r<\/em>\u2019. We can list twenty alank\u00e2rs<\/em> \u2013 <\/span><\/p>\n

      1.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>h\u00e2v<\/span><\/em>4<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/p>\n

      2.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>bh\u00e2v<\/span><\/em>5<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/p>\n

      3.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>hel\u00e2<\/span><\/em>6<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, <\/span><\/p>\n

      4.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>beauty, <\/span><\/p>\n

      Stupefaction and surprise are two additional alank\u00e2rs<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

      2.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>Udbh\u00e2swar<\/em> \u2013 loud reactions of a devotee in madhur ras <\/em>\u2013 the sweetheart\u2019s skirt-string loosens, her uttariya (dupatt\u00e2<\/em>)<\/span><\/span>17<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> falls, she stretches the upper body, yawns, flares the nostrils, sighs heavily, rolls on the earth, sings, does not care for the public, spins around and hiccoughs; these are the udbh\u00e2swar<\/em> reactions.<\/span><\/p>\n

      1<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Things you cannot separate from Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      2<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Those things that are close to Him, but can be separated from Him.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      3<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> The literal meaning is \u2018jewellery\u2019. These are actually bh\u00e2vs that are so beautiful and loving that they entice Sri Krishna instantly, just like jewellery makes an ordinary girl appear beautiful and attracts a mundane \u2018lover\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      4<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> It is a mood in which one turns the neck and moves the eye-brows and the eyes; it is more expressive than the mood called \u2018bh\u00e2v\u2019<\/em>. \u2013 (U.N.11.9-10)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      5<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> When one is in the erotic ras<\/em>, and a seed called \u2018rati<\/em>\u2019 or passion appears in the heart, and then certain feelings occur where there was none earlier \u2013 we call it \u2018bh\u00e2v\u2019<\/em>. \u2013 (U.N.11.6)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      6<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> When \u2018h\u00e2v<\/em>\u2019 clearly indicates erotic desire then we call it \u2018hel\u00e2\u2019<\/em>. \u2013 (U.N.11.11)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      7<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> When a sweetheart has no qualms regarding love-making; adopts a carefree attitude. \u2013 (U.N.11.21)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      8<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> To dress up attractively and imitate the beloved\u2019s actions \u2013 (U.N.11.28) <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      9<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> To wear just one simple ornament and yet look beautiful. E.g. Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni wore an earring made of a rosy mango-leaf (newly-budding) that quivered in the breeze; this looked so novel that it charmed Mukunda immensely and His lotus-face became exultant. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      10<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> When a Vraja-b\u00e2l\u00e2<\/em> is extremely eager to meet her lover, she puts all the ornaments in the wrong places \u2013 we call this as \u2018vibhram\u2019<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      11<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> A mood where joy is predominant. However it is mingled with arrogance, desire, tears, smile, malevolence, fear and anger \u2013 all expressed simultaneously.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      12<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> In this mood, the Vraja-gopi<\/em> reminisces about her Beloved and reveals the feelings in her heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      13<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> When Sri Krishna kisses or touches Srimati R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni\u2019s breasts, She is happy within, yet expresses anger externally \u2013 the wise call it \u2018kuttumita<\/em>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      14<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Sometimes in spite of getting what she desires, a Gopi<\/em> disregards it \u2013 this may be due to (a) over-arrogance or (b) m\u00e2n<\/em>. We call it \u2018bibbok<\/em>\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      15<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Very soft gestures and love-play of the eye-brows; Govinda is an expert in this mood. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

      16<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Not revealing the feeling in one\u2019s heart, due to shyness, m\u00e2n<\/em> and jealousy, yet the lover cannot conceal his feeling, since it gets expressed through some other way. E.g. When Sri Krishna sought a date with a Vraja devi<\/em>, she refused, yet her cheeks manifested gooseflesh and looked very beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
