The Rig Ved has stated &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;<em>om <\/em><em>\u00e2hasya j\u00e2nanto n\u00e2ma chidviviktan mahaste vishno sumatim bhaj\u00e2mahe<\/em> <em>om tatsadity\u00e2di<\/em>.&#8221; &#8211; (1.156.3)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained this verse as follows &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;O Vishno! Your name is conscious and hence self-manifested. If we do not realize the correct way to pronounce it or entirely comprehend its glory &#8211; if we know only little bit of its magnificence and continue to chant we shall gain knowledge about You&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Sri Krishna has told Sri Arjun in \u00c2di pur\u00e2n &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;Dear Arjun, who sing my name and dance before me &#8211; I am telling the truth &#8211; they buy me (I become their slave). Who sing my name and cry before me I become their slave since I am Jan\u00e2rdan<a name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a>. I do not belong to anyone else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Sri Krishna has told in the Mah\u00e2bh\u00e2rat &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Krishn\u00e2 (Draupadi) has called out to me crying &#8220;Govinda!&#8221; although I am so far from her &#8211; this cry rendered from her heart has put me in a debt that is increasing every moment &#8211; this debt is refusing to leave my mind (I cannot forget this debt).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Sri Bali Mah\u00e2r\u00e2j told Shukr\u00e2ch\u00e2rya in Brihan-N\u00e2radiya Pur\u00e2n &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;When the two syllables &#8220;\u2018Ha&#8217; and \u2018ri'&#8221; are present on the tip of one&#8217;s tongue he attains the realm of Sri Vishnu and he never returns to this world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Lord Shiva told Sri N\u00e2rad in Linga Pur\u00e2n &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;<em>Harin\u00e2m<\/em> destroys the evils of <em>Kaliyug<\/em>; if someone chants this name while going, sitting, standing, sleeping, eating, and breathing, just to complete a sentence or without any reason or reverence &#8211; he attains liberation; and who chants <em>Harin\u00e2m<\/em> with devotion goes to His abode and gains the Supreme Being.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam recommends chanting of the Holy Name as the supreme means and the topmost achievable goal &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;<em>etan-nirvidyam\u00e2n\u00e2n\u00e2michchhat\u00e2makutobhayam,<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\"><em>yogin\u00e2m nripa nirnitam harer-n\u00e2m\u00e2nukirtanam.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8211; (S.B.2.1.11)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Shridhar Sw\u00e2mi has explained this verse as follows &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;No means is greater than chanting the Holy Name for the <em>s\u00e2dhak <\/em>or for a <em>siddha<\/em> (one who has realized his spiritual goal). Therefore Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam is saying &#8211; \u2018O King, who wants to fulfill material desires must necessarily chant the Holy Name to accomplish their goal; the ones striving for liberation too have only one option &#8211; that is, to chant the Holy Name; when the <em>yogis<\/em> (the <em>gy\u00e2nis<\/em>) practice their path nicely it makes them take to the path of chanting the Holy Name. There is no need to cite any evidence for this &#8211; that is why Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam uses the word \u2018<em>nirnitam<\/em>&#8216;, meaning, it is an axiom -have no doubt about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0We can achieve all our desires by resorting to Sri <em>Harin\u00e2m Sankirtan<\/em> alone and although we may not perfect other parts of <em>bhajan,<\/em> simply by chanting the Holy Name we attain perfection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0We can chant the Holy Name in any place or at any time. Srimat Jiva Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has written &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;Chanting the Holy Name has the same power in all the ages, however in <em>Kaliyug<\/em> Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> Himself exhorts the living being to chant, hence it has more glory in <em>Kaliyug<\/em>. In an ordinary <em>Kaliyug<\/em>, Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> appears as a <em>Yug\u00e2vat\u00e2r<\/em> and spreads the Holy Name, but this is a very special <em>Kaliyug<\/em> since <em>Swayam<\/em> <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu has descended along with His associates. He Himself chants the Holy Name and makes the living beings do so. Therefore <em>Harin\u00e2m<\/em> <em>kirtan <\/em>is more wonderful now. Even though we have to perform other parts of <em>bhajan,<\/em> we should do them along with chanting. When Karbh\u00e2jan Rishi described the <em>yuga-dharma <\/em>of <em>Kaliyug<\/em> he told King Nimi &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;In <em>Kaliyug<\/em> the ones who are very intelligent worship Sri Hari with plenty of <em>Sankirtan-yagna<\/em> (by chanting lots of <em>Harin\u00e2m<\/em>)&#8221; &#8211; (S.B.11.5.32)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Sri Krishna-Chaitanya Mah\u00e2prabhu has revealed the <em>Harin\u00e2m Sankirtan<\/em>. Whoever worships Him by chanting the Holy Name is indeed blessed. He alone has good intelligence while the rest of the people are foolish. Chanting the Holy Name is the essence of all <em>yagnas<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\n<li>&#8211; (C.C.\u00c2di.3.77-78)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0The scriptures highly extol Sri <em>Harin\u00e2m kirtan<\/em> and state its colossal power &#8211; let us hear some of it. The most sinful person can destroy his sins by taking refuge of the Holy Name &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Just as the roar of a lion drives out the wild animals man can annihilate all his sins by chanting the Holy Name.&#8221; &#8211; (Garud Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0What to speak of destroying sins; the Holy Name can redeem one even from the hell &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Wherever the residents of hell chanted the Holy Name they gained devotion for Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> and attained divine abodes.&#8221; &#8211; (Nrisimha Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0The Holy Name destroys mental as well as physical ailments &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;As soon as we remember His Name and glorify Him all mental and physical ailments are destroyed &#8211; I pay obeisance unto That Sri Anantadev (Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em>).&#8221; &#8211; (Skanda Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;When we chant the Holy Name constantly all our illnesses, troubles, disturbance are destroyed and we are fill with peace.&#8221; &#8211; (Brihad Vishnu Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Even the most fallen sinner gains a pure heart and becomes a devotee if he chants the Holy Name continuously.&#8221; &#8211; (Brahm\u00e2nda Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Who chants the names Hare, Keshav, Govinda and V\u00e2sudev &#8211; <em>Kaliyug <\/em>has no mastery (effect) on them.&#8221; &#8211; (Brihan-N\u00e2radiya Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;My dear child, you need not recite the Rig, Sam and Yajur Vedas; simply chant the name of Govinda continuously since His Name alone is worthy of praise.&#8221; &#8211; (Skanda Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;We can get the result of serving hundreds of holy places by chanting Sri Vishnu&#8217;s name.&#8221; &#8211; (V\u00e2man Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;It is extremely pious to donate one crore cows during the solar eclipse, to reside for one <em>kalpa<\/em> in the water of Gang\u00e2 at Pray\u00e2g, to perform one million <em>yagnas<\/em> and give gold equal to Moun Meru in alms &#8211; however they are not equal to a hundredth fraction of chanting Lord Govinda&#8217;s name.&#8221; &#8211; (Skanda Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;If we chant Sri Vishnu&#8217;s name we get rid of the cycle of birth and death, our enemies such as lust and anger are destroyed and we gain spiritual knowledge.&#8221; &#8211; (Skanda Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;There are various powers (<em>shaktis<\/em>) in alms-giving, fasting, austerities and holy places. Some <em>shaktis<\/em> can destroy all the sins of the <em>devat\u00e2s<\/em> and grant well being. R\u00e2jsuya, Ashwamedh <em>yagna<\/em> and spiritual knowledge too have power. <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> Sri Hari has dragged all those <em>shaktis<\/em> from there and placed them in His Name.&#8221; &#8211; (Skanda Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;The ones who chant \u2018N\u00e2r\u00e2yan&#8217;, \u2018Jagann\u00e2th&#8217;, \u2018V\u00e2sudev&#8217;, \u2018Jan\u00e2rdan&#8217; etc are praised everywhere.&#8221; &#8211; (Brihan-N\u00e2radiya)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;The ones who have no other respite, are steeped in sense gratification, are inimical by nature, without spiritual knowledge and material detachment and without any control over sexual desire and devoid of any righteous conduct &#8211; they can simply chant the Holy Name and can attain such a hight state &#8211; that even all righteous people put together cannot reach.&#8221; &#8211; (Padma Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;The ones who always chant the names such as \u2018N\u00e2r\u00e2yan&#8217;, \u2018Achyuta&#8217;, \u2018Ananta&#8217;, \u2018V\u00e2sudev&#8217; etc. are united with me.&#8221; &#8211; (Var\u00e2ha Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;The one who always engages in sins, even he can attain the supreme abode of Sri Vishnu by chanting the Holy Name.&#8221; &#8211; (Nandi Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Dear brahmins, the ones who constantly chant Your Holy Name in spite of being hungry and thirsty &#8211; Sri Hari is extremely pleased with them.&#8221; &#8211; (Brihan-N\u00e2radiya Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Chanting the Holy Name of Sri D\u00e2modar is the only good thing in life &#8211; it is also treasure we can gain and the sole benefit of living.&#8221; &#8211; (Skanda Pur\u00e2n and Padma Pur\u00e2n)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">&#8220;The connoisseurs of <em>bhakti ras<\/em> consider the chanting of the Holy Name as the outcome of <em>bhakti<\/em>, since the Holy Name is the only sure way to arouse precious divine love &#8211; it never fails.&#8221; &#8211; (Srila San\u00e2tan Gosw\u00e2mi in Brihad-Bh\u00e2gavatam.2.3.165)<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Srila San\u00e2tan Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained this statement as follows &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Aho! How much can I extol Sri <em>Harin\u00e2m-sankirtan<\/em> that is the greatest of all means? The connoisseurs of <em>bhakti<\/em> have ascertained chanting of the Holy Name as the highest achievable goal. You may ask &#8211; <em>prem<\/em> is the outcome of devotional practice and chanting is the means to achieve it, why are you calling it the \u2018result of <em>bhakti<\/em>&#8216;? My answer is &#8211; You are right. However chanting the Holy Name leads certainly to <em>prem<\/em> (whosoever chants the Holy Name will surely get <em>prem<\/em>), hence we are calling it the result of <em>bhakti<\/em>. In fact there is no exception to this rule.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Therefore the saints call <em>Harin\u00e2m-sankirtan<\/em> as the product of <em>bhakti<\/em>. When we chant the Holy Name we naturally gain the priceless divine love -the result of devotional practice.\u00a0 Hence chanting is the goal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu has stated with His holy lips &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"TEXT-ALIGN: justify\">\u00a0&#8220;Chanting the Holy Name destroys all our sins and redeems us from material attachment. It purifies the innermost heart and is the source of all devotional practices. It arouses Sri Krishna-<em>prem<\/em>, and makes us relish its nectar.
