What is reason behind Sri Krishna\u2019s false sleep ? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018shritum shrotra-manoharam vrajavadhu \u2013 lil\u00e2m \u2013 itho \u2013 jalpitam\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. <\/em>It means, \u2018to hear the attractive conversation of the Vrajavadhus\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>Meaning of \u2018Vrajavadhu<\/em>\u2019 and \u2018lil\u00e2<\/em>\u2019 in the verse<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Vrajavadhus<\/em> are those who bind Sri Krishna with the cords of love-ras.<\/em> <\/span>He is performing the pastime of false sleep so as to witness how they steal His flute, and to hear their ras<\/em>-full conversations.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Lil\u00e2<\/em>\u201d \u2013 means imitating a dear one by dressing up and acting like He does\u201d. – (U.N.)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For example Sri Ratimanjari told her sakhi<\/em> \u2013<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“O Beautiful One! Look, there is R\u00e2dh\u00e2 Who is deranged in Sri Krishna\u2019s viraha<\/em><\/span><\/span>[1]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, so She is smearing musk on Herself, <\/span>has worn yellow garments, has tied Her hair with beautiful peacock feathers, has worn a garland of wild flowers, and is imitating Madhuripu (Krishna) <\/span>by playing the flute. <\/span>May She protect us!\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Flute stealing \u2013 a very sweet lil\u00e2<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

“Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni slowly moved Her feet in a manner so as to silence Her anklets, carefully moved Her gold bangles upwards and casting swift glances all around, smilingly lifted the flute right from M\u00e2dhav\u2019s lap.\u201d – (Pady\u00e2vali \u2013 254)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sri Krishna is performing this false\u2013sleep to witness such captivating sweet pastimes (for example, flute-stealing) and to relish the sweet conversations of Sri R\u00e2dh\u00e2r\u00e2ni and the sakhis.<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

What sort of conversation ? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“shrota \u2013 manoharam<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>. It means \u2018that which steals the auditory senses and the mind.\u2019 The Vrajavadhus<\/em>\u2019 conversation steals the auditory senses because it is sweet, soft and pleasing. It steals the mind because it is charged with meaning. The mind is the director of all the other senses. <\/span>Hence when the mind is attracted, all other senses stop functioning. Hence Sri Krishna is spellbound when He hears such sweet talk.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Explanation of \u2018prem- odbheda \u2013 nirargata \u2013 prasrimara \u2013 pravyakta \u2013 romodgamam<\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It means that Sri Krishna\u2019s deep love is extremely enhanced. So He cannot contain His excitement. His hairs are standing on end. <\/span>Let us worship that false\u2013sleep of Sri Krishna.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Srila Kavir\u00e2j Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has explained the word \u2018up\u00e2smahe<\/em>\u2019 <\/strong>(literal meaning = we worship), as \u2018pashy\u00e2mah<\/em>\u2019 meaning \u2018we behold\u2019. Srila Bhatta Gosw\u00e2mip\u00e2d has written \u2018sevema<\/em>\u2019 or \u2018we serve\u2019. <\/span>Both express the true feelings of Sri Lil\u00e2shuk. <\/span>Besides these, from the point of view of the s\u00e2dhak<\/em>, there may be another explanation of \u2018up\u00e2san\u00e2<\/em>\u2019. <\/span>(\u2018up\u00e2smahe<\/em>\u2019 is the verb-form of \u2018up\u00e2san\u00e2<\/em>\u2019). Srip\u00e2d Shankar\u00e2ch\u00e2rya has defined \u2018up\u00e2san\u00e2<\/em>\u2019 in the preface to the purport of Chh\u00e2ndogya Upanishad<\/span>[2]<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> as \u2013<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

” \u2018Up\u00e2san\u00e2<\/em>\u2019 is defined as meditating on some object specified in the Scriptures and uniting the mind so completely with it that we should not be aware of anything else.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Meditating on the daily pastimes of Sri Sri Gour\u2013Govinda is an intimate bhajan<\/em> of the Goudiya Vaishnavs<\/span><\/strong>. We should control our mind and gradually absorb the mind in the Divine pastimes. We should practice this so that the subconscious mind is not aware of anything other than the forms, qualities and pastimes. Srimad Jiva Gosw\u00e2mi has chalked out the method of practicing \u2018smaran<\/em>\u2019 in a very expert manner. <\/span>He says.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“Smaran<\/em> consists of five stages-<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(1)<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>When we think of the pastimes occasionally, with intervals, it is called \u2018smaran<\/em><\/strong>\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(2)<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>When we wilfully drag our inner mind away from all sense objects and think of the pastimes in an ordinary manner it is called \u2018dh\u00e2ran\u00e2\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(3)<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>When we meditate and can see distinctly the forms and qualities of all that is involved in the pastimes, it is called \u2018dhy\u00e2n<\/em>\u2019<\/strong>. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(4)<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>When we meditate unbrokenly (continuously) like a flow of nectar, it is called \u2018dhruv\u00e2nusmritih<\/strong><\/em>\u2019.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span>(5) <\/span> <\/span>When all the pastimes spontaneously (without any <\/span> <\/span> <\/span> <\/span>conscious effort on our part) fill our inner mind as soon as <\/span> <\/span>as we wish to meditate, it is called sam\u00e2dhi.<\/em><\/strong> – (B.S.278)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Generally in the practicing stage, we may attain smaran,<\/em> dh\u00e2ran\u00e2<\/em> and dhy\u00e2n<\/em>. Dhruv\u00e2nusmriti<\/em> is attained when we possess \u2018bh\u00e2v<\/em>–bhakti<\/em>\u2019 and sam\u00e2dhi<\/em> is possible on reaching prem-bhakti<\/em> alone.21.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
