Who is sadhu?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ten offenses<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Let us discuss the ten offenses briefly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The First Offense<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Sri Padma Pur\u00e2n says &#8211; &#8220;When we blaspheme the devotees we supremely offend the Holy Name. The devotees who steadfastly chant the Holy Name are preaching the glory of Sri N\u00e2m-Prabhu to the world; how can the Holy Name tolerate the blasphemy of such devotees?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Amongst all the offenses this one is the strongest, hence we call it <em>Mahad-apar\u00e2dh<\/em> or \u2018great offense&#8217;. Mostly it is this offense that obstructs us, although we firmly chant the Holy Name and practice devotion. It is the chief offense to the Holy Name; therefore the preceptors have posted it on top of the list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h2>What does \u2018nind\u00e2&#8217; or \u2018blasphemy&#8217; mean?<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Srimad-Bh\u00e2gavatam says &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>nindanam dosha kirtanam&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u00a0<\/em>Meaning &#8211; &#8221; \u2018<em>Nind\u00e2<\/em>&#8216; or \u2018blasphemy&#8217; means \u2018to glorify<a name=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a> someone&#8217;s fault&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0When our speech shows disrespect, intolerance, envy or violence towards a devotee &#8211; it is \u2018<em>nind\u00e2<\/em>&#8216;. Just censuring a devotee is \u2018great offense&#8217; &#8211; then we can easily guess what huge offense we will commit if we treat him with envy and violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Often we think that if a devotee does something foul, then why should it be wrong to criticize? For are we not speaking out fact? To tell you the truth, even thinking like this amounts to an offense. The scriptures have stated that &#8220;<em>nind\u00e2<\/em> means \u2018to discuss a fault&#8217; &#8221; &#8211; the question whether it is true or false does not arise. The scriptures say &#8211; &#8220;<em>suchakasyaapi tad-bhavet<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; this means &#8220;do not discuss a devotee&#8217;s fault&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h2>Who is a s\u00e2dhu?<\/h2>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Here it is natural for us to raise this question. Who is a <em>s\u00e2dhu?<\/em> The answer is &#8211; &#8220;&#8216;<em>S\u00e2dhu&#8217;<\/em> refers to those who have taken the shelter of \u2018Bh\u00e2gavat-<em>dharma<\/em>&#8216;. A devotee has forsaken even the desire for liberation; he has accepted the path of devotional practice solely to gain the service of Sri Krishna&#8217;s lotus feet &#8211; so he is \u2018<em>s\u00e2dhu&#8217;.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Srila Vishwan\u00e2th Chakravartip\u00e2d has written in M\u00e2dhurya-K\u00e2dambini &#8211; &#8220;We should not think that only those who are kind, peaceful, tolerant and are endowed with all good qualities are devotees or \u2018<em>s\u00e2dhus<\/em>&#8216; in the real sense &#8211; if we blaspheme them, we commit an offense; however, there is no problem if we criticize those who do not have such sterling qualities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Actually, even if &#8220;<em>sarv\u00e2ch\u00e2ra-vivarjit\u00e2h<\/em> <em>shathadhiyo vr\u00e2ty\u00e2 jagad-vanchak\u00e2h<\/em>&#8221; &#8211; the ones who are devoid of all etiquettes, are big frauds and are cheating the entire world &#8211; if they worship Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> &#8211; we should count them as \u2018<em>s\u00e2dhus&#8217;<\/em>. This is because we should never blaspheme a devotee who adores Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> exclusively, even though he may be evil. We have to accept him as a <em>\u2018s\u00e2dhu&#8217;<\/em>. Sri Krishna has Himself instructed Arjun &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;O Arjun, If one is extremely evil &#8211; that is &#8211; harms others, steals others&#8217; property and wife &#8211; yet worships me exclusively (does not worship anyone other than me, does not practice any other path such as <em>gy\u00e2n <\/em>or <em>karma<\/em>, resorting only to <em>bhakti,<\/em> does not wish to attain anyone other than me) &#8211; accept him as a \u2018<em>s\u00e2dhu&#8217;<\/em>. After all, he has taken to the best path (meaning &#8211; he has decided, whether I go to hell or get a lower form of life &#8211; I will worship none other than Sri Krishna), so he is a <em>\u2018s\u00e2dhu&#8217;<\/em>.&#8221; &#8211; (B.G.9.30)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If we blaspheme such a devotee we are bound to commit offence. Then we need not stress how much <em>apar\u00e2dh<\/em> we will commit if we criticize a good devotee. When we see a bad devotee, we may criticize him, so the Lord has called him a <em>\u2018s\u00e2dhu&#8217;<\/em> so that we remember not to blaspheme him. Whether we speak or hear bad about a devotee &#8211; both are offenses. Therefore if someone blasphemes a devotee, we should close our ears, remember Sri <em>Bhagav\u00e2n<\/em> and leave that place. Sriman-Mah\u00e2prabhu has illuminated this subject more in detail.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0The Lord said -&#8220;If I hear even once Sri Krishna-<em>n\u00e2m<\/em> from someone&#8217;s lips, he is worthy of worship and the best of all.&#8221; &#8211; (C.C.Madhya.15.106)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0&#8220;Hence, one who says Sri Krishna-<em>n\u00e2m<\/em> once &#8211; I consider him a Vaishnav and revere him.&#8221; &#8211; (C.C.Madhya.15.111)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0There is none who has not uttered Sri Krishna-<em>n\u00e2m<\/em> even once, so we should forsake all criticisms. Then it will be easy for us to save ourselves from this \u2018great offense&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0The Lord said &#8211; &#8220;No purpose is served by criticizing; sin is all that we gain.
