A SPEAKER OF THE TRUE PATH

Radhe Radhe!

Mataji’s first post in this category inspired me to contribute this parable from the life of Lord Buddha. Buddha Bhagavan gave some nice practical teachings about the concept of the Spiritual Master or Guru.   Whom should we choose as a Guru? The process of selecting a Guru, what characteristics we should look for while coming to a decision etc. etc. Here is an incident when the Lord tells us something about who is worthy to take the Vyas-asan.

Lord Buddha was asked:

-To what extent can a person be a speaker of the true path?

He answered:

-If a person teaches the path in such a manner that the audience can transcend the tyranny of the material things and learn how to transcend feelings, perceptions, impulses, and consciousness – learn detachment with regard to these – then that person can be called a speaker of the true path.

– If he is himself trying to transcend the pull of the material world and feel nonattachment toward it, then we can say that he is living in accordance with the true path.

– If he is liberated by this transcendence and nonattachment, then you can say he has found nirvana here and now.

Similarly in our Bhakti path also we come across speakers who talk about manjari-bhav, confidential nikunja-leelas and what not, they constantly wipe their eyes with hankies while speaking, yet what effect to they have on the audience ? After hearing such a speaker regularly for a month, do the members of the audience have anartha-nivritti? Do we achieve wonderful qualities such as humility and adosha-darshi (not seeing fault in others)? Or am I still envious of my Guru-sister and brother being more popular than I am? Am I still laboring hard to accumulate rupee after rupee by fair and foul means so that I may settle in Dham, with the firm resolution that  I will perform good Bhajan AFTER I settle in Dham.

Is my head still puffed up with the knowledge that none of these poor mites are practicing Bhajan as I do ! Neither do I feel any detachment for the plush accommodation I have in this metropolitan city. When I go to Dham I seek out the most comfortable place I can find out there.

Believe me I am a very good orator myself, you  should hear me at the meetings of the Board of Senior Executives in my company. Oh, I could give a good try at Harikatha too with a lot of success(especially the tear-jerking part) ! But I know what a hypocrite I am, and that I am full of envy, false ego and a great desire for wealth, fame and power. As a result I can never influence my audience and pave their journey on the path of Truth.

On the other hand, when  the Bhagavat-speaker (kathakar) is himself free of anarthas and nishkapaT, his words reform the heart, and in a true sadhak, his nectarine speech even cleanses the chitta (sub-consciousness). A true sadhu  does not have to open his mouth to instruct – “darshane pabitra koro, ei tomar gun” – this is the litmus test for a sadhu. He will be able to purify even a sinner like myself. Radhe Radhe !!

  1. Radhe Radhe Your comments were excellent ! Good orator does not mean good devotee , that is true but orator also in the process of devotional service too so we do not criticise but take as a sadhak for sure but by talking for krsna he can purify him self for sure but we do not have to surrender to them. Many time one can get cheated as We have tonnes of exp 👿 . Darshna pavitra kare yeh tumare goon……………that is the top mos quality.
  2. But if we become bhajana-kriya, you come to the practice of devotional service, naturally you have to give up. Because we accept a disciple to engage in the bhajana-kriya — first of all he must give up these anarthas. So these anarthas, one cannot giving up smoking or drinking, but actually, if he takes to devotional service, he can very easily give up. He can very easily give up. There are so many examples. It is not story. So if there is bhajana-kriya sincerely, then the anartha-nivrtti automatically becomes. Then you become clean. Here it is said, jnana-tapasa putah, purified. Jnana-tapasa 😀 😆 🙂
  3. Radhe Radhe !! Yes dada, u r right. “Jnana-tapasa” indeed is what we require, and not fanatical blind following. You said – ” the speaker is performing Bhajan too”, but i MUST say that if the aim of his Harikatha is to gain ” laabh puja pratishtha” then as Mahaprabhu said – pl refer CC – that these desires are like the cuscuta plant (a parasitic plant) that grows on the Bhakti-plant. After this, the Bhajan – even chanting Mahamantra, becomes like giving nutrition to the parasite, and now this nutrition does not go to the Bhakti-plant any more. Slowly the parasitic plant will become very strong, that is he will become a big guru with more and more material desires for followership by any marketing-policy (in this case he’ss market certain philosophy), and the Bhakti-plant will die. But of course he has to keep up the facade.
  4. radhe radhe marketing for krsna is good but not as guru as a sadhak that is only acceptable and srila rupa goswamipad in nectar of instruction said clearly that ”’ only one who can control urges of genetiles than he can make disciple all over world ……….” , on that basis guru has to be there for sure….
