The Story of Doobdi Bhatt

Radhe Radhe

My mother is a devotee of Swami Narayan Bhagwan and she always tells me a pastime of Sriji Maharaj till this date and Sriji maharaj pastime is very enchanting to hear and many times I read and I can not put away book. I would like to share one of the pastimes with the devotees.

One day Sriji maharaj was sitting along with his devotees in Gadhda town which was very dear to him, and they were planning to open a temple of sri Radha Gopinath in Gadhda, and devotees were offering donation very generously and maharaj was just watching and suddenly one poor man with dirty torn cloth and very unhealthy countenance entered the hall.  However the place was so crowded that it was difficult for him to go in and at the same time he was feeling guilty as he was poor. Nevertheless he also wanted to give some donation for the temple but still hesitating to go further. Now the other devotees also noticed and started to make a fun for him. Jokingly they asked him ofr big money.  This poor man name was ”Doobdi Bhatt”. And now suddenly Sriji maharaj saw him. Although he was very far, Maharaj told him to keep advancing. He said, ” do not worry, keep coming.” The other people were shocked as Maharaj was now calling him directly.  When he reached Sriji he fall down straight at his lotus feet.  Sriji maharaj very affectionately held him and embraced him and asked him what he could do for him. Doobdi Bhatt slowly took out his turban which was full of holes in many places but it had many knots. Then he started to open a knot one by one and everyone saw that he was taking out one paisa coins and giving to maharaj. Maharaj was taking with lots love and smile and was stretching his hand asking for more. In this way Doobri Bhatt  gave 13 times . Then he had no more. Maharaj suddenly said loudly bolo Sri Gopinath ki jay. ” Every body joined loudly in the glorification.  Maharaj said ”temple construction will be finished because of 13 paisa donation. No more donation required.”

Many rich devotees thought we gave big money but maharaj never reacted like this way. So they asked the reason for it , Maharaj replied that he gave all what he had in his life and nothing was left behind him and he does not know what he will eat to morrow, yet he fully surrendered to the Lord by knowing that He is the only doer of all while you gave partial wealth;  at the same time you know what was left behind it and what you  will eat tomorrow as you have less faith in me as a result you are still holding back a lot.” Now all devotees realized their mistake ……………..Maharaj was looking for quality not quantity. This is also the nature of Sri Krishna.

All the pastimes of the Lord and His devotees are great. Please read and water the bhakti lata in a right mood and help us to remove anarthas and increase attachment to Krishna.

  1. Radhe Radhe! Now I see the difference! Krishna remains aloof or available depending solely on degree of surrender! There’s greater love in giving one’s all to Lord!
